Sometimes we catch ourselves using and reusing language, and we delete and rephrase ourselves, proud of rutting out a cliché. Half a page further on and we look at what we’ve written and without hesitation, delete it in favor of a cliché. Some clichés are just right for the job, with no apologies.

Hence a few entries from The Dictionary of Clichés by James Rogers. Some of his more than 2,000 entries are so obscure you wonder why he bothered; others are so exactly right they shine like a new penny.

Local author and retired Fayette County teacher Stella Cooper Mitchell returns to center stage at the Fayette County Public Library in Fayetteville on Saturday, Mar. 6 at 1 p.m., to read from her hilarious new book, “Normal.” The reading is free and open to the public. To many of Fayette’s homebound seniors, having a pet is a source of companionship and comfort. However, due to financial need or the inability to get out of their home, some seniors struggle to provide food for their pets. “Often, receiving proper nourishment can become a mutual affliction for the pet and pet owner - especially when leaving the house isn’t an option,”says Fayette Senior Services (FSS) Executive Director, Debbie Britt. ‘You’re a Winner!’ was the theme recently at the High Noon Toastmaster’s Club in Fayetteville.  Everyone was asked to share why they think they are a winner with answers ranging from serious to humorous.  Great time was had by everyone with  $20 “dollar bills” given to each participant.  Toastmasters International is the world’s largest educational organization specializing in communication and leadership training.
