Carter family's music hits the stage

When the Legacy Theatre’s Artistic Director, Mark Smith, chose “Keep on the Sunny Side: The Songs and Story of the Carter Family” as the anchoring show for the professional theatre’s eighth season, he knew it would be a kind of homecoming.

“I grew up in the Appalachian mountains of southwest Virginia,” said Smith. “I know this story, this music, and these people like the back of my hand.”

Battle of Brown's Mill reenactment slated for next weekend

Those interested in American history will be able to get an up-close look at a portion of it later this month. The weekend of Jan. 24-26 will feature the Battle of Brown’s Mill-Hospital Town Reeanctment 2014.

To be held at the historic battlefield site on Millard Farmer Road, the event will be the kick-off for the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Battle of Brown’s Mill which will include a reenactment of the battle and of Newnan as a “hospital town” during the Civil War. Read More»

There she is ... Miss Starr’s Mill

On Saturday, Abby Feltner was crowned the new Miss Starr’s Mill 2014. Thirty-two Starr’s Mill high school girls competed for the title in casual wear, evening gown, interview and talent.

Abby wowed the audience with her rendition of the song “At Last.” This was the junior’s second year competing in the pageant. She was last year’s runner-up to outgoing queen Emma Wernecke.

Between her two wins, Abby has won $3,500 in scholarship money. The Miss Starr’s Mill pageant awards more scholarship money than any other high school pageant in the nation. Read More»

Fayette’s nonprofits selling tickets to Pinewood gala

Ticket prices range from zero to at least $250 for a reception and tour of the site of Pinewood Atlanta Studios this coming Saturday, a way for the company building the venue to lend a helping hand to local nonprofit organizations.

Pinewood will be the site of a Jan. 18 gala event and tour, with all the proceeds from ticket sales by local nonprofits going to those organizations.

At least one organization, Christian City, is giving its share of the tickets away to its patrons for appreciation for earlier donations. Other nonprofits are selling their tickets to raise money. Read More»
