Powers Festival this weekend

Powers Festival 2012 will be held at Powers Pavilion from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 1-3.

Powers Festival has been supplying the best arts, crafts, food, fun, and entertainment for 42 years and is well known throughout the nation. The festival has been selected several times by the Southeast Tourism Society as one of “The Top Twenty Events” for the month of September.

Powers Festival was formed by well-known artist Tom Powers in 1972 on the grounds of the Powers family plantation. The festival was a huge success from its beginning and involved all the communities of Heard and Coweta counties. Read More»

Backstage conversations about NTC's 'Seussical'

The set and costumes are complete, the choreography is in place, and all is set to bring “Seussical” to the Newnan Theatre Company stage. “Seussical,” a musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, opens at NTC at 8 p.m. on August 30.

The show debuted on Broadway in 2000 and has been a favorite with children and regional theaters ever since.

Cub Scouts get into the swim

Cub Scout Pack 75 held their Back to School Party Aug. 25 at the Planterra Ridge pool, where they not only had fun swimming, eating, and fellowshipping, but got to earn their swimming belt loop. They learned the basics of water safety from the lifeguard and had to demonstrate swimming the length of the pool with a kickboard. Cub master Jim Moan also explained four rescue techniques, “reach, throw, row, and go (with support).” This was just one of many fun learning adventures Pack 75 will do this year. Some 50 children participated in the 11th annual Fayette County Youth Fishing Rodeo at Luther Glass Park Aug. 4. They were provided fishing poles and bait along with hot dogs and ice cream and lucky participants walked away with tackle boxes and fishing rods given as door prizes. The winners included: Braden Dunham, Reese Brown, Joey Hawthorne, Blake Necessary and Evan McConnell in the 5-7 year old division; Tanner Bolton, Coleman Campbell, Gavin Necessary, Mary Faught and Dylan Barfield in the 8-10 year old division; and Tyler Cranston, Tommy Powell, Riley Botkus and Kaitlyn Smillie. Larissa Hoffman, a Peachtree City resident and former World History teacher at Sandy Creek High School, writes under the pen name Larissa Reinhart.
