Fayette Master Gardener Extension volunteers contribute 75% of fresh produce to Atlanta Community Food Bank in 2011

Fred Conrad, Community Garden Coordinator of the Atlanta Food Bank released his 2011 report of fresh food donated to area food banks, ministries and shelters. The total produce received from the entire Atlanta area campaign was 106,292 pounds; the most successful season since joining the campaign in 1996. Fayette County Master Gardeners donated 79,231.5 pounds of this campaign total.

Annual Noel November event set for Saturday

Each year the Fayette County Board of Realtors organizes a huge holiday extravaganza benefiting local charities. This year’s event will raise money for Fayette Youth Protection Home, Fayette Senior Services, Promise Place, The Breast Cancer Survivor’s Network, the Joseph Sams School, and the St.Vincent dePaul Society. Sunflowers over my shoulders . . .

Walter Mills must have the biggest green thumb in Fayetteville. The impromptu gardener’s home on Kathi Avenue is the site of a wealth of mammoth sunflowers that reach upwards of 12 feet in height. Market Day in downtown Fayetteville continues to expand its offerings that includes items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, plants, jellies, honey, woodworking crafts and jewelry. A rose by any other age . . .

John Simon of Fayetteville proves that, even at age 91, you’re never too old to enjoy growing roses. This World War II Air Force veteran was the proud winner of a rose bush at the recent South Metro Rose Society 26th Annual Rose Show. Held May 14-15 in Fayetteville, the rose show featured over 330 roses of all varieties grown by local rose enthusiasts, as well as rose arrangements. A large group of show visitors enjoyed viewing, smelling, and photographing the exhibited blooms at no charge. Read More»

More than 200 guests toured six gardens April 30 as part of the Fayette Master Gardener Association’s Spring Garden Tour and Plant Sale.
