Parents, prepare your students for some changes, including the schools they attend.

The Fayette County Board of Education at its March 18 meeting is expected to vote on the redistricting lines that will follow the closures in June of three elementary schools and one middle school.

Commission to vote on Phase 2 of bypass all 5 have opposed

An effort to stop the second phase of the West Fayetteville Bypass in its tracks is not possible because terminating construction contracts would leave the county susceptible to lawsuits, according to Fayette County Commission Chairman Steve Brown.

In a memo to his fellow commissioners, all of whom have opposed the bypass, Brown notes that the majority of the work on the remainder of the second phase — from Eastin Road to Ga. Highway 92 — is complete. Read More»

Employee furloughs are a possibility as Fayette County government deals with cost increases in liability insurance and other categories, according to County Commission Chairman Steve Brown.

With the new five-member commission averse to a property tax increase, there will be a scouring of the county budget, and Brown recently sent a letter to all county employees in which he implores department heads, chiefs and constitutional officers to crack down on spending. Read More»

Jolly wants to bring civility back to council meetings

Local businessman Ryan Jolly has announced he will seek the mayor’s office in Peachtree City this November.

At 34, Jolly is on the young side but he has seen enough council meetings first-hand to know what one of his top goals would be if elected: to bring credibility to council.

“My major goal is to bring respect back to the office of mayor,” Jolly said, noting that by definition the mayor’s major role is to lead city council meetings. “... The mayors, what they say and do is reflective on the whole city.” Read More»

The Peachtree City Council unanimously approved an additional $50,000 settlement with a female firefighter who claimed that former Fire Chief Ed Eiswerth stormed into her hotel room at a conference in November as part of an attempt to have sex with her. Read More»

Senoia/Coweta sign joint park venture

The Coweta County Commission and the Senoia City Council have approved an intergovernmental agreement that will lead to the establishment of a future active recreation park in the Senoia area. The new park will be designated as the Leroy Johnson Park.

The agreement calls for the city to purchase the future park property and to provide a warranty deed to the county. The county will be responsible for the park’s operation. The agreement also calls for initial construction to begin within three years. Read More»

Stover wins runoff election, takes vacant PTC/east Coweta House seat

The District 71 runoff election is over and David Stover will represent part of east Coweta County and portions of the west side of Peachtree City in the Ga. House of Representatives. The business owner defeated Sharpsburg general contractor Thomas Crymes in the March 5 election that saw Stover win 61 percent of the vote.

Both Republicans, Stover and Crymes were the top two vote-getters in the Feb. 5 special election that saw a field of six candidates facing off to fill the seat vacated by Robert Stokely. Read More»
