2nd discrimination suit names PTC, police chief

A former Peachtree City housing code official has filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the city, Police Chief H.C. “Skip” Clark and police Sgt. Kay Crider.

Senoia tables hotel tax ordinance

The Senoia City Council last week tabled a proposed ordinance that would establish a Hotel/Motel Excise Tax. Tabled until the proposal can be researched further, the ordinance is expected to surface again in the near future.

As written, the tax would carry a rate of 3 percent on the price of room rental and would apply to a variety of lodging accommodations. Senoia currently has only bed and breakfast businesses and no hotels or motels. Read More»

Stair tower to highlight exterior renovations to Westpark Walk

Plans to renovate the exterior of the Westpark Walk shopping center at the intersection of Ga. highways 54 and 74 were approved by the Peachtree City Planning Commission Monday night.

Coro Realty Advisors plans to add a stair tower element facing the intersection that would contain a new sign and be a central architectural feature for the two-story building at Westpark.

Tax assessor: Property values level out; bottom reached?

Preliminary figures from the Fayette County Tax Assessor’s Office are offering good news about the decline in property values experienced over the past several years during the recession.

The drop in this year’s overall tax digest — which is the combined value of all parcels in Fayette County — is expected to be just 1 percent, the county commission was told at its retreat Friday morning. That’s compared to the countywide decline in property values of 10 percent seen last year, so there is hope this is a sign that residential property values have found their low point. Read More»

F’ville Council approves temporary ban on bright LEDs

The Fayetteville City Council on April 4 gave a 90-day approval to an ordinance that would cut visual clutter by curtailing the use of the increasing presence of “super-bright” LED lighting on business windows and roofs.

The vote on the temporary approval came with the understanding that more research on the issue would be conducted before the ordinance returns for further consideration. The five Fayette County commissioners who campaigned against the West Fayetteville Bypass, largely on an outcry that it cost too much money, may be positioning themselves to spend a similar amount, $28 million, to build a second bypass, this time on the east side of Fayetteville.

Probe of former county attorney to get airing Thursday night

Commissioner Randy Ognio will lead a Fayette County Board of Commissioners’ discussion Thursday night about “issues concerning former County Attorney Scott Bennett.”

Those issues revolve around a lengthy investigation conducted by the county marshal’s department into whether Bennett violated the terms of his contract by representing clients in four different legal cases from 2008-2010, a time frame during which he was forbidden to do according to language in the contract. Fayette Chairman Brown appeals ethics verdict

Fayette County Commission Chairman Steve Brown is determined to have his day in court. A filing in Fayette County Superior Court has Brown appealing the decision by the Fayette County Ethics Board that found him guilty of two violations of the county ethics ordinance that were alleged by former Commissioner Robert Horgan.

In the petition to the court, attorney Drew Whalen said the ethics board found Brown to be in violation of the ethics ordinance because he gave “a direct instruction to the county’s human resources director to seek a legal opinion from the Ga. Attorney General.” Read More»
