County cutting budget by $1 million as taxes slide with lower property values

UPDATED print version (Tuesday, May 25, 2010) — Fayette County government will have to get by next year on $1 million less than this year, but there will be no projected property tax increase, according to the preliminary $73.3 million budget recommended to the County Commission Monday morning.

PTC planners want it in writing before vote

UPDATED print version (Tuesday, May 25, 2010) — With loose ends left to be examined, the Peachtree City Planning Commission Monday night postponed a vote on a rezoning proposal to build 100 senior apartments off Newgate Road in Kedron Village.

The proposal has been recommended for approval by Peachtree City interim Community Development Director David Rast, but commissioners wanted to see their concerns addressed in a proposed development agreement that has yet to be put in writing. Read More»

Fayette Commission candidates at Christ Church Monday night

The July 20 primary is closing in. Those interested in hearing from the four candidates for two Fayette County Commission seats can get a closer look Monday night in an event hosted by the Fayette County Tea Party.

Recession or not, Tyrone to hold steady at 2.89 mills

The Tyrone Town Council is on its way to adopting the $3.085 million FY 2010-2011 budget by the end of June. Expected decreased property tax revenues are being offset by 3 percent departmental reductions and the transfer of $136,000 from the reserve account. The 2.89 millage rate is expected to remain unchanged.

The council Thursday continued the discussion of the proposed General Fund budget that totals $3,085,674. That amounts to a $45,005 increase, or 1.5 percent, over the current year. Read More»

Coweta schools first day is Aug. 9

The Coweta County Board of Education has approved changes to the 2010-11 school system calendar and has established Monday, August 9 as the first day of school for the upcoming school year.

School system Public Information Officer Dean Jackson said the Board made that and other minor calendar changes in a called meeting on Friday. The new calendar maintains the 180-day school year for students, and allows the school system to offer 187-day contracts for certified teachers for the upcoming school year, Jackson said. Read More»

Coweta purchases new ambulance

Coweta County commissioners May 18 added to the county’s ambulance fleet with the approval of an $89,996 low bid by Peach State Ambulance. All bids included the trade of an older ambulance.

County Administrative and Operations Director Tom Corker in a May 5 letter informed commissioners that the low bid came from Peach State Ambulance, Inc. The $89,996 bid for a 2010 Chevrolet G4500 Type III ambulance with a retail of $109,996 came with a trade-in allowance of $20,000 for the county’s 2005 type III ambulance. It went from verbal brawl to closed lips, and it took little more than a whisper from the guy in charge. Brief comments Tuesday night by Fayette County School Superintendent John DeCotis appeared to effectively rein in charges and counter charges on alleged ethics issues by board members against board members in the past two weeks.
