Judge rebuffs NAACP on Fayette district vote lawsuit

Last week a federal judge denied a proposed lawsuit settlement that would have drastically changed how members are elected to the Fayette County Board of Education.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Timothy C. Batten, Sr. upheld the recent qualifying process for the three school board seats, which means this year’s election will continue to be held at-large and which allows voters to have a say in the outcome of all five seats on each board. Read More»

Few contested Coweta races coming July 31

Only a handful of contested races in Coweta County will dot the political landscape in the July 31 primary election. Among those are races for the District 71 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives, a seat on the Coweta County Superior Court and the District 3 Congressional seat.

Dist. 3 Congressman Lynn Westmoreland in the Republican primary will face Milner Realtor and former Lamar County Commission Chairman Kent Kingsley and Jonesboro resident and small business owner “Chip” Flanegan. No one in the Democratic Party qualified for the seat. Read More»

Tyrone Mayor Dial to host June 5 ‘wireside chat’ on TSPLOST

It is being billed as a venue inspired by President Franklin Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats during World War II. A conference call pertaining to the July 31 vote on the Regional Transportation (TSPLOST) plan is being branded as a “Wireside Chat” and will be held for Fayette County residents on June 5 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The conference call will be hosted by Tyrone Mayor Eric Dial, who also serves as Fayette County’s mayoral representative to the 10-county Atlanta Regional Commission. Read More»

Fayette County Commission qualifying starts May 30

When the smoke clears on noon Friday, Fayette voters will have a clear picture of who will run for the three posts on the Fayette County Commission that will be up for grabs this year.

Qualifying for the posts begins Wednesday at 9 a.m. and ends at noon Friday. It was delayed a week to wait for the final word from the U.S. Justice Department on the new five-district map adopted by the commission in February. Read More»
