Brown, McCarty oppose bypass by voting against asphalt contracts

To record a vote against the West Fayetteville Bypass, new Fayette County Commissioners Steve Brown and Allen McCarty voted against the “consent agenda” of housekeeping matters at last week’s regular commission meeting.

The agenda, which generally consists of non-controversial “housekeeping” items, last week included the awarding of annual bids for asphalt acquisition and milling services for various paving and resurfacing projects. County agenda: Qualifications and pay for magistrates, library expansion

With a light agenda for Thursday night, the Fayette County Commission is expected to approve a $715,000 expansion for the Fayette County Library in downtown Fayetteville and pay for it with long-designated sales tax proceeds.

The project will add 1,000 square feet to the library’s meeting room and another 4,200 square feet to extend the southeast side of the existing facility to create a new reading room and also create room for more bookshelves. Read More»

Commission approves access road to new Lake McIntosh dam

The Fayette County Commission at a special called meeting Dec. 29 voted 4-1 on a resolution that allows for the acquisition of property that will essentially follow the extension of TDK Boulevard for use as an access road to the Lake McIntosh dam.

The vote to acquire the property gives the county the ability to negotiate with Peachtree City and Pathway Communities, the primary property owners, to acquire the 80-foot right-of-way needed for the access road, commissioners said. The length of the roadway, from where TDK Boulevard ends, is approximately 3,600 feet. Read More»

McCarty, Brown propose term limits for county commission

They were just sworn in last week and will not attend their first Fayette County Commission meeting until 3:30 p.m. Jan. 5. But commissioners Allen McCarty and Steve Brown have inserted an item in the agenda that — if approved by a majority vote of the board — would impose terms limits on board members and another that would require a 24-hour public notice on issues that would require a board vote.

On the topic of term limits, Brown in a weekend email said he and McCarty included an item on the Jan. 5 agenda that would limit the service of commissioners to two consecutive terms. Read More»
