Law-breaking, fines cut from revised Fayette ethics rules

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners last week began to explore a major revision of its ethics ordinance.

But the first draft of the ordinance, authored by County Attorney Scott Bennett, eliminates the current provision for a potential fine of up to a $1,000 fine per ethics violation.

In another marked turn from current practice, the first draft does not include a provision for it to be considered an ethics violation if a commissioner or other official breaks any federal, or state law. Read More»

Fayette eyes charging stormwater fee

At its regular meeting Thursday night, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners will consider a proposal that would lead toward a new stormwater fee being collected from all property owners or tenants, both residential and non-residential.

The commission has been presented with a feasibility study conducted by Integrated Science and Engineering of Fayetteville. The study lists a “significant backlog” of stormwater projects and maintenance on county-owned property and right-of-ways, according to a memo issued to commissioners in advance of the meeting. County honors heroic firefighters

Four Coweta County firefighters were honored last week by the Coweta County Commission for their heroic action July 20 that saved a life. Lower F’ville Rd./Hwy. 154 intersection closed this weekend

Lower Fayetteville Road will be closed Oct. 9 and 10 on the east side of the intersection with Ga. Highway 154 for replacement of a cross drain pipe. Signage will be in place and detours will be routed along Bob Smith Road, to Willis Road, to Hwy. 154. Signage is in place now notifying the traveling public.

County: Have your say on future Fayette road building plans

Fayette County officials are seeking public comment on the draft of the county’s latest transportation plan. The county later on will be asking you to pay for parts of this plan.

A multitude of components of the plan can be downloaded from the county’s website at www.fayettecountyga.gov. A link to that documentation will be posted on the home page through Oct. 20, county officials said. Read More»

Sandy Creek Rd. closed as bypass intersection work continues

This is the temporary closure and reconfiguration of Sandy Creek Road at the West Fayetteville Bypass. Work on the temporary closure and reconfiguration of the intersection at Sandy Creek Road and the West Fayetteville Bypass that began Monday will continue through the end of the week.

Once completed, Sandy Creek will be re-opened but the bypass will remain closed until the traffic signal at Ga. Highway 54 becomes operational later this month.

Fayette County Public Works Director Phil Mallon said access to the portion of Sandy Creek Road between Hood Avenue and the Sandy Creek Road entrance to the hospital will be limited to residents living within the closure area. Read More»

Fayette’s new defined benefit pension plan over-funded for now

Just 15 months into its new hybrid pension plan, the anticipated costs for Fayette County is roughly half of the initial projections.

The combination defined benefit/defined contribution plan requires employees to pay 2.5 percent of their salary into the plan, and the county pays approximately 3.8 percent of each employee’s salary. Read More»

Sandy Creek Road to be closed for a week starting Oct. 4

Drivers who normally use Sandy Creek Road will have to make other plans next week.

The Fayette County Department of Public Works announced Tuesday that beginning Oct. 4 Sandy Creek Road from Hood Avenue to Piedmont Fayette Hospital will be closed to through traffic for five days.

The closure will occur so that work crews can complete the intersection of Sandy Creek Road and the West Fayetteville Bypass. Read More»
