New sheriff takes charge in Fayette

The first floor of the Fayette County Justice Center was packed with approximately 250 people on Dec. 27 as Fayette County Sheriff-elect Barry Babb took the oath of office. Babb after the brief ceremony thanked a host of friends, family, fellow officers and other guests that filled the large area and offered a few remarks about his experiences and his view on law enforcement. McCarty to be county legislative liaison

DOT to replace Hwy. 92 S. bridge over Flint River

The Georgia Department of Transportation has selected a contractor to replace the Ga. Highway 92 bridge over the Flint River between south Fayette County and Griffin.

The contract was awarded to low bidder Gregory Bridge Company of Eatonton, Ga. in the amount of $3.43 million.

The work is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2014, according to the contract.

The project includes the construction of a .72 mile bridge and approaches on the Fayette-Spalding county line.

According to the DOT, the current bridge is “structurally and functionally deficient.” Read More»

3-pet limit lifted for some

If you live on more than 5 acres, have as many as you want

Fayette residents living on large tracts of land no longer face the three-animal limit in county ordinances as it applies to cats and dogs.

The limit was removed with an ordinance change approved by the commission last week. The change applies only to property that is zoned agriculture residential, which requires a minimum lot size of five acres. Read More»

Horgan charges Brown violated Fayette ethics code

Outgoing Fayette County Commissioner Robert Horgan has filed an ethics complaint against fellow Commissioner Steve Brown. The complaint alleges that Brown violated three county ordinances by making an order to a county employee, disclosing information discussed by the board in executive session and also violating attorney client privilege: the latter two of which he did without first seeking approval from his fellow commission members.
