39% of Coweta properties see decline in value

The review of Coweta County property values is complete and the county Board of Assessors last week mailed assessment notices to every property owner in the county. The notices are required by law even if there has been no change to the property in the past year. Fayette Commission: No overall tax hike, but fire tax is going up

To avoid a countywide property tax increase, the Fayette County Commission is planning to balance the 2012-2013 general fund budget with $1.4 million in unrestricted cash reserves.

Hard times for Bernhard Road drivers as upgrade severs east-west route until fall

What you’re seeing in this view looking east is road work along Bernhard Road just west of Ga. Highway 85 South. The work is part of the intersection improvement that will have turn lanes on all four sides of the busy intersection and a signal to manage the traffic flow. Anyone driving by the intersection of Ga. Highway 85 South and Bernhard Road recently cannot help but notice the closure to the east side of Bernhard and the dramatic changes to the landscape along Hwy. 85.

The construction project has severed one of the few east-west routes through Fayette County.

It’s all part of a Ga. Dept. of Transportation-funded intersection improvement project that, once completed in the fall, will add turn lanes and a traffic signal to the busy intersection. Read More»

Fayette asked to rezone for TV studio

A proposal to allow a TV studio to be built on Ga. Highway 138 in north Fayette County will be heard by the Fayette County Commission this (Wednesday) afternoon.

The project would require a change to the land use plan for the area, as the 85-acre tract is currently contemplated to have a residential subdivision in the future behind a “strip” of office development along the highway.

Judge rebuffs NAACP on Fayette district vote lawsuit

Last week a federal judge denied a proposed lawsuit settlement that would have drastically changed how members are elected to the Fayette County Board of Education.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Timothy C. Batten, Sr. upheld the recent qualifying process for the three school board seats, which means this year’s election will continue to be held at-large and which allows voters to have a say in the outcome of all five seats on each board. Read More»

The possible merger of the Fayetteville and Fayette County fire departments is still being evaluated, but in the financial aspect, it may be just what the doctor ordered for the county’s ailing fire budget, which is funded exclusively by property taxes.

Fayette Commission OK’s $300K to replace McIntosh Rd. bridge over Flint River

With the McIntosh Road bridge over the Flint River needing significant repairs, the Fayette County Commission Thursday committed to spending $300,000 on preliminary engineering for the project.

The county is also expected to kick in an estimated $672,000 in construction and right of way purchasing, with an additional $2.24 million in federal funds making up the rest of the tab. The county’s portion will come from revenues from the 2003 transportation sales tax. Read More»
