County Commission may shift money from west bypass to east bypass

Fayette County transportation officials are recommending that up to $12.8 million in potential federal funds be shifted away from the West Fayetteville Bypass to the proposed East Fayetteville Bypass, if the regional T-SPLOST fails at the polls July 31.

The suggestion will be taken up for a vote of the Fayette County Commission at its regular meeting Thursday, July 26, at 7 p.m. at the county’s Stonewall government complex in downtown Fayetteville. Read More»

Coweta approves school proposals

The new school year is approaching and with it the Odyssey Charter School received a variance from the Coweta County Commission on July 10 that will add three temporary modular classrooms. Also at the meeting, Resurrection Lutheran Church in east Coweta received a conditional use permit to that paves the way for establishing a preschool on the church property.

Commissioners unanimously approved a variance request by Odyssey Charter School for the placement of three temporary modular units on school property that do not meet facade requirements contained in the zoning category. Read More»

Recession still hampers Twelve Parks development

The effects of the longstanding recession are evident in many places. That is especially true in the area of residential development. It was in light of that reality that the Coweta County Commission recently agreed to let CRM Central Properties, the owner of the planned Twelve Parks residential and commercial development on Ga. Michael Fouts has been promoted to assistant administrator for Coweta County. Fouts was previously director of IT and had been moved to administration to assist on a short term basis while assistant administrator Kelly Mickle was out on maternity leave. He will fill a previously vacant assistant administrator position. GDOT approves Poplar Road, I-85 interchange

The Georgia Dept. of Transportation (DOT) on Tuesday issued an approval for the concept plan required to move ahead with the full-diamond interchange project at Poplar Road and Interstate 85. The approval means the design plan can be developed and right-of-way acquisition areas identified.

The DOT approval came three weeks after the Coweta County Commission amended the agreement with consulting firm CHA to include the scope of services for the preliminary design phase for the planned interchange at I-85 and Poplar Road, the location of the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital. Read More»

Coweta roads to get rehab work

Nearly a dozen roads across Coweta County will soon get some needed repair work. The Coweta County Commission on July 10 approved a $2.98 million bid to perform full-depth reclamation and other rehabilitation road work.

The bid by E.R. Snell totaling $2,984,841 and funded through the county’s 1-cent sales tax (SPLOST) was the lowest of the three bids received.

The work will consist of full depth reclamation, patching, crack relief interlayer and plant mix resurfacing, according to county Development and Engineering director Wayne Kennedy. Read More»

Fayette Commission ponders its next county manager

What might be the most interesting item at the July 12 meeting of the Fayette County Commission will involve a discussion on securing an interim county administrator until a replacement for recently retired County Administrator Jack Krakeel can be found.

Krakeel’s early retirement was effective July 1. Having previously announced his intent to retire, the commission has been advertising for the position in state and national publications.

Krakeel at one point had considered staying on past the end of June but subsequently decided to end his 26 years with the county effective July 1. Read More»
