Fayette School Board goes to school for boards

The Fayette County Board of Education got a little education of its own Jan. 29 at a retreat sponsored by the Georgia School Boards Association. Organization Director of Field Services and former Fulton County Board of Education member Zenda Bowie essentially provided a primer on the roles and responsibilities of both school board members and the superintendent.

Bowie used the planning session occasion to discuss various aspects of “general boardsmanship” that highlighted the roles and responsibilities of school board members and superintendents across the state. Read More»

Coweta to make up 1 of 5 missed ice days, 5 minutes at a time

The week-long closure of Coweta County schools and nearly all others in north Georgia two weeks ago due to the Winter Storm of 2011 meant that school systems needed to decide how many days to make up and how to do it. With four storm days built in to the 180-day school cycle, the Coweta County School System decided to make up the fifth day by adding five minutes to school days beginning Jan. 31. Read More»

Enrollment declines could cost 27 classroom positions

Numbers could change, but right now the Fayette County School System is looking at losing funding for more than 27 classroom teachers and parapros, mostly due to declining enrollment.

Human Resources Director Reanee Ellis last week gave Board of Education members an initial look at the possibility of losing 27.45 classroom positions.

Ellis told the board that the school system has lost 1,050 students since August 2007. Read More»

New school chief ‘impressed’ by Fayette students, teachers

New Fayette County school Superintendent Jeff Bearden last week completed his first three weeks as head of the Fayette County School System. He shared his first impressions in an interview.

“I think the first thing I would like people to know are my first impressions on Fayette County and our school system. And I’m proud to use the term ‘our school system’ now and not the school system I’m looking forward to joining,” Bearden explained. Read More»

Fayette BoE restores 1.5% of school system pay

School system employees got a portion of what they wanted Jan. 18 when Fayette County Board of Education members voted unanimously to restore 1.5 percent of the 4.5 percent pay cut from 2009 that took effect in the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

The 1.5 percent restoration came at the recommendation of Superintendent Jeff Bearden. Read More»

Fayette schools to make up 3 lost ice days during Feb. winter break

Smola’s job plea keeps Tuesday meetings for school board

The organizational meeting of the Fayette County Board of Education on Jan. 4 began easily enough with the unanimous election of board member Bob Todd as chair and board member Marion Key as vice-chair.

But when it came to the board’s meeting nights the discussion became more problematic, with board members eventually voting to keep the meetings on Tuesdays through July then switch to Monday nights for the remainder of the year. Yet it was of note that the primary reason for changing the meeting days last year to Tuesdays was never addressed by anyone on the board. Read More»

Administrative changes coming to Coweta schools in 2011

The transition of Dr. Steve Barker at the end of March as superintendent of the Coweta County School System will bring several administrative changes to the school system. Barker announced last week the changes in job positions include Dr. Marc Guy who will become Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services, Vince Bass who will serve as Director of Human Resources and Mark Whitlock who will continue to serve as CEO of the Central Education Center but will also serve as Director of Public Policy. With a newly elected member, the Fayette County Board of Education’s first meeting of 2011 on Jan. 4 may see a shift in voting power.

The board’s alignment for the past few years has featured a 3-to-2 split sometimes, with board members Bob Todd and Marion Key being on the short end of the vote.

That may change in the coming year as Sam Tolbert joins the five-member board, replacing Lee Wright, who did not run for reelection. Read More»
