Fayette school system debt service millage due to decrease

A little tax relief should be coming for Fayette County property owners later this year. The Fayette County School System is currently projecting a decrease in the debt service millage by 1.7 mills for FY 2011, essentially halving the current 3.42 mills.

The main reason for the decrease comes by way of a transfer from the school system’s 1-cent sales tax (SPLOST) and a refinance on the 2001 School Bond along with a reduction in the accompanying interest payments. Read More»

No significant changes coming in Coweta class sizes

The Georgia State Board of Education (SBOE) cut local school systems a major break Monday in terms of required class sizes. But Coweta County schools will likely be unaffected because class sizes should remain essentially the same as this year.

Coweta schools first day is Aug. 9

The Coweta County Board of Education has approved changes to the 2010-11 school system calendar and has established Monday, August 9 as the first day of school for the upcoming school year.

School system Public Information Officer Dean Jackson said the Board made that and other minor calendar changes in a called meeting on Friday. The new calendar maintains the 180-day school year for students, and allows the school system to offer 187-day contracts for certified teachers for the upcoming school year, Jackson said. Read More»

DeCotis puts kibosh on ethics brawl

It went from verbal brawl to closed lips, and it took little more than a whisper from the guy in charge. Brief comments Tuesday night by Fayette County School Superintendent John DeCotis appeared to effectively rein in charges and counter charges on alleged ethics issues by board members against board members in the past two weeks. Fayette BOE budget talks to continue Tuesday

Budget discussions at the Fayette County Board of Education meeting Tuesday night will pick up where they left off at the last meeting. Now projecting a $16.27 million surplus by the end of the June 30 fiscal year, the board will continue looking at a variety of proposed measures to offset what is expected to be a $14.953 million decrease in the budget that takes effect July 1.
