Fayette classroom teachers to have e-access to student data, test scores

Teachers in Fayette County’s public schools are about to get another cybertool at their disposal, and this time it will help them monitor student assessments on statewide standardized tests.

Coweta collecting fewer sales tax dollars for schools as retail slides

It’s a sign of the times, the economic times that is. A recent report on the Coweta County School System’s one-cent sales tax (SPLOST) revenues showed that collections dipped by nearly $750,000 between November 2009 and October 2010 compared to the same time a year earlier.

A report by Assistant Superintendent for Finance Keith Chapman showed collections for the period of November 2009 to October 2010 totaled $19,227,614. That compares to the $20,020,788 collected during the one-year period from November 2008 to October 2009. Read More»

Coweta Chamber seeks Education SPLOST extension

Members of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce made a special request at the Nov. 9 meeting of the Coweta County Board of Education. Chamber chairman-elect Vicki Kaiser (at podium) was joined by chamber administrators and board members in asking school board members to continue the Education SPLOST (1-cent sales tax) when it expires in June 2012. Kaiser praised the school system for its many innovations on behalf of students, teachers, parents and the community. Dees and Parker take Coweta County BoE seats

The local races were few in Coweta County Tuesday night. But in the end the important races for the Coweta County Board of Education seat for District 1 was taken overwhelmingly by Amy Dees and the District 1 at-large seat was won by a slim margin by April Parker. Coweta voters also cast their lot with Nathan Deal, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland and Sen. Johnny Isakson.

The school board’s District 1 seat pitted Amy Dees against Andrew Krause and write-in candidate Jimmy Harrison. Dees garnered 70.91 percent of the vote, with Krause taking 26.99 percent and Harrison receiving 2.1 percent. Read More»

Schools have $18.4 million cushion, but more state cuts ahead

Financial reports from the Fayette County School System show the system currently on track to end the fiscal year on June 30 with an estimated $18.4 million surplus. The decision by voters on the winners of two contested seats on the Coweta County Board of Education is less than two weeks away. The Citizen asked the five candidates for those seats to respond to questions that are relevant to public education, both now and for the future. Their responses are provided below.

Recycling doubles in PTC

Recycling volume triples after companies required to offer it to all residents

The recently-adopted requirement for all waste haulers in Peachtree City to offer recycling has paid big dividends, according to city statistics.

The city’s recycling rate has doubled from 23 percent to 46 percent. Moreover, the recycling increase has led to an increase in the amount of material diverted from the landfill, with the number jumping from 4 percent before the recycling options were required to 12 percent after.

The city does not mandate that residents recycle, but each waste hauling company operating in the city is required to offer curbside recycling pickup. Read More»
