Jane Owens sets goals in GOP runoff for BoE Post 4

Voters in the July 22 runoff for the District 4 Fayette County Board of Education seat will choose between Diane Basham and Jane Owens. The Citizen asked the two candidates to provide their thoughts on the issues they believe are pertinent in the July runoff election and how they would run their campaign. Basham’s comments were provided last week. This week it is Owens who was given the opportunity to have her say.

Owens, who came in third in the primary, entered the runoff race after second place vote-getter John Kimbell withdrew last week due to what he called a “job-related matter.” Read More»

Voters in the May 20 primary for the District 4 Fayette County Board of Education seat put Diane Basham in first place followed by John Kimbell in second place. The Citizen asked the two candidates to provide their thoughts on the issues they believe are pertinent in the July runoff election and how they would run their campaign.

In Coweta, BoE's Dees, Mullin re-elected with newcomer Menk

Coweta County voters in local contested races on May 20 chose incumbents Amy Dees and Harry Mullins and first-time candidate Linda Menk in the county’s three contested races for seats on the Coweta County Board of Education. Votes tallied countywide showed a 14.81 percent voter turnout.

The District 1 race featured incumbent Amy Dees and challenger Monica Terrell. Dees took 66.67 percent of the vote compared to 31.75 percent for Terrell. Read More»

Coweta invites public to learn about school system flexibility options

The Coweta County School System will hold public sessions on May 28 and June 2 to provide information about upcoming decisions regarding state flexibility options for the school system. The Ga. Dept. of Education (DOE) has given school systems until June 30, 2015 to decide if they will operate as a status quo system, a charter system or an Investing in Education Excellence (IE2) system. Fayette BoE gives $10K to visioning initiative

The Fayette County Board of Education on Monday unanimously approved a $10,000 contribution to the Fayette Visioning Initiative.

5% BoE budget increase pays for 1.5% teacher pay hikes

With the first budget increase in more than five years, the system still plans to spend $3 million more than it collects in revenue

The Fayette County Board of Education on May 19 unanimously approved a $170.5 million tentative budget for the 2014-2015 school year that begins in July.

That’s a nearly 5 percent increase over the current year’s budget, the first budget growth in at least five years.

Even so, the school system plans to spend nearly $3 million more than it takes in for the coming year by reaching into leftover unspent funds from this year’s budget. Read More»

Coweta County voters in local contested races on May 20 chose incumbents Amy Dees and Harry Mullins and first-time candidate Linda Menk in the county's three contested races for seats on the Coweta County Board of Education.

The District 1 race featured incumbent Amy Dees and challenger Monica Terrell. Dees took 66.67 percent of the vote compared to 31.75 percent for Terrell.

The District 3 race saw incumbent Harry Mullins squaring off against challenger Jan Horne. Mullins ended the night with 59.59 percent of the vote while Horne took 39.99 percent. Read More»

On 2-0 vote, Colwell gets nod for vacant BoE post

With only one item on the agenda, the Fayette County Board of Education Monday afternoon appointed former interim Superintendent Dan Colwell to the Post 2 seat vacated by school board member Mary Kay Bacallao.

The vote on the appointment was 2-0, with board members Marion Key and Bob Todd in favor of the appointment and board member Leonard Presberg abstaining. Board member Barry Marchman was not present at the meeting. Read More»

Colwell appointed to Post 2 school board seat

Former Fayette County School System interim Superintendent Dan Colwell has been appointed to the District 2 seat by the Fayette County Board of Eduction.

A Monday afternoon meeting saw Colwell appointed on a 2-0 vote. Board members Bob Todd and Marion Key voted in favor of the motion while board member Leonard Presberg abstained.
