Local troop goes to 2010 National Scout Jamboree

Part I

On July 24, Troop 1829 left for the National Scout Jamboree. After three days of fun- filled traveling that included a battleship tour, a look around the site of the First Battle of Manassas, and more, they finally arrived at the Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia.

Instantly, they were stunned by the size of the national event.

Local scout Julian Pasto said, “Even the food here is huge. It takes like a hundred different bins to feed just our Subcamp (a division of a certain region camp i.e. Southern Region).” Read More»

Marie Valentino

Marie Valentino (nee Santoro), 98, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2010.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Nicholas Valentino; 4 brothers; and 3 sisters. Marie was the loving mother of Janice Wagner (husband, Dave), Kent Valentino (wife, Joan); grandmother of Tamara, Mark, Lisa, John, Kristi, and Jonna; proud great-grandmother of 9; and dear aunt of many. 

The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Peachtree City.  The interment will be held at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon, Ohio at a future date.  Read More»

100 Year old Miss Emmie Lou Pound and 16 year old Miss Macy Brown become oldest and youngest members of the Frankie Lyle Chapter

When Miss Emmie Lou Pound of Fayetteville overheard a conversation about the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), she said, “My granddaddy fought in that war and I would like to join up with those ladies.” That’s all Linda Robinson of the Frankie Lyle Chapter, UDC needed to hear. She immediately called Miss Emmie and found out that Miss Emmie’s grandfather, Joseph Gilbert Pound, joined the Confederate Army on February 24, 1862 in Talbot County. He served as a Private in Company K, 27th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Read More»

Merle “Harold” Stanton, 66, of Plano, Texas, formerly of Fayetteville, died July 28, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patsy Ann Stanton and parents Merle and Mattie Stanton.

Margaret Nall Spears of Riverdale

Margaret Nall Spears, a long-time resident of Riverdale, GA and later at Baptist Manor in Palmetto, died peacefully at Lafayette Nursing Home in Fayetteville on July 29, 2010.

She retired from the Atlanta Public School System with over 20 years of service. In later years, she was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Riverdale’s Senior Citizens’ organizations, and her beloved church, Riverdale First Baptist. “Miss Margaret” was a pillar of her church and community.
