School level Teachers of the Year named

The process to find the next Fayette County Teacher of the Year is underway. Schools throughout the Fayette County Public School System have just finished selecting their individual teachers of the year. Ruth Lenora Schlegel, 89, of Peachtree City passed away November 29, 2011. Ruth was born in Brooklyn, NY to Edward Kling & Catherine Johnson Kling. Ruth retired from Consolidated Edison in NY as a customer service agent. She was an expert seamstress who taught sewing in New York City. She was a charter member and President of the Peachtree Pioneers in 1986-1987. Ruth was a volunteer for Travelers Aide at Hartsfield Atlanta Airport. She loved traveling with her friend Jessie Price. Ruth was a loving mother and grandmother and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Read More»

Frank Marshall, 92, of Peachtree City

Mr. R. Frank Marshall, 92, of Peachtree City, Ga., passed away Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 at Doctor's Hospice in Fayettevile, Ga.

Mr. Marshall was born Dec. 27, 1918 in Long Hollow, Va. to the late Charlie and Ethel Marshall.

He retired as president of Central Georgia Production Credit Association, a division of the Federal Land Bank. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army and a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church, Fayetteville, Ga.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel Joy Thrailkill Marshall and two brothers. Read More»

Gregory Terrell Dixon, age 35 of Sharpsburg

Mr. Gregory Terrell Dixon, age 35 of Sharpsburg, passed away on Nov. 27, 2011. He was born in Dublin, Ga. on Jan. 20, 1976. He was a carpenter by trade and a member of 3rd Wheel Band. He loved his family and friends, music and soccer.

He was predeceasd by his mother, Mary Brogdon Black. Surviving are his father, Larry Dixon; brothers, Mike Dixon (Danielle), Robbie Dixon (Kim), Patrick McKenzie, Torey Grandt, Kenneth Marchman, Jeff Smith; grandmother, Gladys Brogdon; stepfather, Grady Black; nieces and nephews. Read More»

Fayette deputies aiming to make holiday better for several needy families locally

Some families in Fayette County don’t have much of a Christmas to look forward to, and that’s where the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help.

The department’s “Shop with a Sheriff” program is seeking monetary donations to help provide such families with a fantastic Christmas thanks to a special shopping trip for a number of local youth.

Paired with a uniformed sheriff’s deputy, each child will be buying essentials such as heavy jackets, clothes, shoes, backpacks and the like, said organizer and sheriff’s detective Josh Shelton. Read More»

Fayette EMS, F’ville Fire Department collecting Toys for Tots

Calling all toys! For the fourth year in a row, the Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services/EMA will partner with the Fayetteville Fire Department to support the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Drive.

From Nov. 28 to Dec. 20, the stations will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for children under 9 years old and with a great demand for girls’ toys.

“Last year we were able to collect over 400 toys through the drive and we hope that this year’s drive will top last year’s,” said Firefighter/EMT Josh Sisk, who organized the drive. Read More»

Former FCHS football lineman will light Fayetteville's community Christmas tree Saturday evening

Nearly 10 years ago, Justin (J.T.) Holloway was pinned underneath a car, his life hanging in the balance. His injuries were so severe that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

But there was a ton of fight left in Holloway’s spirit: plenty enough for him to defy the odds. Months of recovery, 23 surgeries and yes, even a few setbacks ... they all seem so far away.

It’s been 10 years, and J.T. is still going strong, despite a brain injury that has robbed him of the ability to walk and talk. But that injury has not stolen his spirit, his “can-do” attitude and a “never quit” mentality. Read More»

Heritage Christian will host 10th annual ‘Dickens Village’

Heritage Christian Church in Fayetteville invites the community to come and enjoy the sights and sounds of an authentic old English Victorian Village at its 10th annual Dickens Village, held nightly for two weekends, Dec. 2-4 and Dec. 9-11 from 6-9 p.m. Dickens Village is free of charge.
