Fayetteville’s Troop 212 racks up merit badges

Twenty-six Boy Scouts from Troop 212, Fayetteville, recently spent a week at Woodruff Scout Camp in Blairsville, Ga. The scouts attended the week camp June 19-25 and earned over 85 merit badges. Mrs. Laura Kay Feuerstein, of Senoia, GA, passed away on July 9, 2011 at the age of 47.

Laura was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and a friend to many. She was a very strong, generous and loving person who always put the needs of others first. Mr. Walter Allie Ponder, Sr., 92, of Fayetteville, formerly of East Point, died on July 8, 2011.

Mr. Ponder proudly served East Point for 25 years, from 1963 – 1988. He served as City Councilman for 20 years and as Mayor for 8 years. He was a longtime member of Fayetteville Christian Church and the Lamplighters Sunday school class. He was a 33 degree Mason and was a 50-year member of the East Point Masonic Lodge. Read More»

Ernest Clain Bannister, 89, of Fayetteville, died July 8, 2011.

He was born August 10, 1921 in Pickens County, Georgia, the fifth son of the late Rufus and Ida Bannister.

He was preceded in death by first wife Rosalene Fletcher Bannister; parents; four brothers, Broughton, Alman, Linc and Rex Bannister.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joyce Tate Bannister; brother-in-law Bill Tate of Sharpsburg, GA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Janice and Joe Lynch of Fayetteville; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Read More»

Family, friends marvel at Ory Stoker’s spirit after crippling dive

Life can change in a moment.

Gregory Stoker, 31, known as Ory to his friends and coworkers, was playing with some kids by a pool at a family reunion in Thomasville on June 25. The kids were chasing him with water balloons and Stoker dove into the water and did not immediately resurface.

“He was blue, he wasn’t breathing and my sister did CPR while we called 9-1-1,” said Stoker’s mother, Kathryn. “He told me he remembers hitting the bottom and realizing he couldn’t move before everything went white.” Read More»

Howard Legg, 82, of Fayetteville

Howard Legg, 82, of Fayetteville, passed away on July 5, 2011.

He served his country as a member of the US Air Force. He was a 50-year member of Plumbers-Steamfitters Local #72.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lois Christine Legg of Fayetteville; daughter Judy White of Fayetteville; son Tony Legg and his wife, Lea James of Newnan; grandchildren Kristy Johnston, Michael White & Michael Legg; two great-grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Read More»
