Dealing with grief at Christmas

Amid the joy of Christmas, there is another side to the Christmas story that is often overlooked. Not everyone was thrilled to learn of the coming of the long-awaited Messiah, especially King Herod, who could not stand the thought of anyone competing for his throne.

Feeling threatened, Herod ordered a massacre of all baby boys under age two. Among the sounds of that first Christmas were soldiers’ threats, baby’s cries, and young mothers wailing in desperation as grief collided with the good news of Christmas. Read More»

Freedom to Live Ministries opens doors in Fayetteville

There’s a new church in Fayette County and its pastor says he is “excited to spread the word.”

Lawrence G Jennings Jr., a retired Air Force NCO from Virginia, started Freedom to Live Ministries in 2007 and recently opened the ministry’s doors as a church in Fayetteville. The congregation meets Sundays at 8 a.m. at 85 N. Business Parkway, Suite 105 Fayetteville. (FTLM shares a church with Abundant Life Word Church.)

Jennings served under the mentorship and pastoral leadership of Bishop B. Courtney McBath, senior founder of Calvary Revival Church (CRC) Norfolk, Va. He says the life of a servant has always been a part of his spiritual growth. Read More»

Providence will offer Divorce Care/Divorce Care for Kids

A new 13-week DivorceCare and DivorceCare for Kids (DC4K) session will begin on Monday, Jan. 23, at Providence United Methodist Church. Providence is at 592 Bernhard Rd. in Fayetteville.

Providence UMC and Heritage Christian Church partner to offer these programs. Both sessions are free and nursery is available for children not participating in DC4K.

DC4K curriculum is geared for children ages 5 - 12 years. The group meets each Monday evening (except for Fayette County school holidays) from 6:30 - 8 p.m. Read More»

Local church receives appreciation from Marine vets

During their 2011 Awards Ceremony, Marine Corps veterans from the Clyde Thomason Detachment of the Marine Corps League presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Cathedral of Christ the King in Sharpsburg

The award was presented to Bishop David Epps who received it on behalf of the church. Epps, a Marine veteran, served as the detachment’s first chaplain for over two years and was recently elected to serve as the junior vice commandant. He also serves as the Jr. Vice Pound Keeper for the Military Order of the Devil Dogs, Pound 350. He is also a member of the American Legion. Read More»

Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. in Peachtree City held an Employee Appreciation Day called “Putt Fore Pantry” the Friday before Thanksgiving. Employees collect food items to benefit the Real Life Center and use the food that is donated to build a nine- hole miniature golf course throughout their building. Teams of employees then play golf to win prizes. Henry Thomas Lau, of Peachtree City, Ga. died unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011 at Piedmont Fayette Hospital.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Aug. 21, 1950 to Henry and Dorothy Lau.

Stan Braxton, MSgt, USAF (Retired), 51, of Fayetteville

Stan Braxton, MSgt, USAF (Retired), 51, of Fayetteville, N.C. passed away Dec. 16, 2011.

Mr. Braxton served his country & retired from the USAF after 22 years of service, 17 of which were with the 24th Special Tactics Squadron as a Combat Controller.

MSgt Braxton was a highly decorated combat veteran, his awards included 2 Bronze Stars 1 with valor and the Defense Meritorious Service medal with oak leaf cluster. He was very active in his community, his church and with the NESBA. Read More»
