Riley Neil Swicord, 50, of Peachtree City

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, Riley Neil Swicord, of Peachtree City, (formerly of Fayetteville, Ga. and Wedowee, Ala.) passed away at Southwest Christian Care, surrounded in love by family and friends. Riley was 50 years old and fought a brave and tenacious battle with brain cancer. He is now at peace.

Martha Joyce Malcom, age 79

Martha Joyce Malcom died on Oct. 15, 2011. She was married to Col. (ret.) Ben S. Malcom of Fayetteville, Ga.

Joyce was born July 14, 1932 in Augusta, Ga. She was the daughter of Robert and Rosa Swint. Joyce's' mother died of pneumonia six months after Joyce was born. She was raised by her grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Albert Barksdale of Bastonville, Ga.

Joyce graduated from Gibson High School and the Augusta Business College. She then worked as a secretary for the Savannah River Nuclear facility (DuPont). Read More»

Hoke Smith, Jr., 71, of Fayetteville

Hoke Smith, Jr., 71, of Fayetteville, passed away on Oct. 10, 2011. 

He served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. He then became owner and operator of the Midas Muffler shop in Fayetteville.

Mr. Smith was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Robert Franklin Cauthen, 77

Robert Franklin Cauthen, 77, passed away on Oct. 9, 2011. 

He was a member of the U.S. Army and went to work for J.C. Penney's, where he later retired.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Cauthen of 54 years; daughters, Patti Howell and husband, Ervin of Sharpsburg, Ga.;  Cindy Brackett and husband, Daniel of Stockbridge, Ga.; 4 grandchildren; Courtney Grega, Carter Brackett, Caitlin Brackett and Michael Howell; brother, Hugh Cauthen of Gainesville, Ga., and several nieces and nephews.  Read More»

Helen Marie Slayton, age 100

Helen Marie Slayton, 100, passed away Oct. 9, 2011.

Survivors include daughter Jean Armbruster and her husband Kenneth; daughter Debra Kolster and her husband Richard; grandchildren Theodore Armbruster and his wife Shana Kane, Amy Kolster, and Laura Kolster. 

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Albany Rural Cemetery, Albany, New York.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to The Fayette County Humane Society at fayettehumane.org.

Helen Lorene Chitwood, age 90, of Peachtree

  Mrs. Helen Lorene Chitwood, of Peachtree City, passed away on Oct. 9, 2011, at the age of 90. 

Mrs. Chitwood is described as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who always made people feel welcome in her home. She was always pleasant to be around and never had anything bad to say about anyone, except when the Braves or Falcons did something she didn’t like. She was an avid sports fan and supporter who never missed one of her children’s games or activities and could sometimes be heard cheering down the street when her favorite teams were playing on the television. Douglas Irvan Carson, 81, of Fayetteville

Douglas “Doug” Irvan Carson, 81, of Fayetteville, formerly of Lebanon, Tenn., passed away on Oct. 4, 2011. Petty Officer 3rd Class Machinist Mate Doug Carson proudly served on the USS Taussig, in the US Navy, during the Korean Conflict.  After 20 years of dedicated service, he retired from Lockheed Martin. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to fish and play golf. He was a family man who enjoyed spending time with those he loved.

James Franklin Dietz, III, 64, of Peachtree City

James Franklin Dietz, III "Jim" 64, of Peachtree City, Ga., died Oct. 3, 2011.

He was born in Charlotte, N.C. to James Franklin Dietz, Sr. and Dorothy Jackson Dietz.

Mr. Dietz served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was an avid golfer & awesome "grandpa."
