Meagan Palmer Montgomery engaged to Briggs Cabot Coker

Mrs. Linda Montgomery of Sharpsburg announces the engagement of her daughter, Meagan Palmer Montgomery, to Briggs Cabot Coker, son of Ms. Teresa Coker of Lithia Springs and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Coker of Douglasville.

The bride-elect is the daughter of the late Scott Montgomery of Sharpsburg. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Suddaby of Union City. She is a graduate of Northgate High School and Auburn University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in aviation management. Georgia education escapes with 5.7% budget cut

Despite a glimmer of hope in March, state revenues have been in a tailspin the past two years, and that has required significant budget cuts from the General Assembly.

Last week the House of Representatives passed a budget that’s 27 percent less than the original budget adopted for 2009, according to Rep. Matt Ramsey, R-Peachtree City. That translates to $4 billion less over a timeframe of two years. Read More»

Southern Crescent Chorale concert raises over $4.000 for Christian City’s Children’s Village

The Southern Crescent Chorale is happy to announce that the annual benefit concert held on Saturday, Mar. 27 raised over $4,200 for the Children’s Village at Christian City. In addition to a performance by the Southern Crescent Chorale, under the direction of Janice Folsom, the crowd was blessed with the beautiful music of the Woodward Academy choirs under the direction of Stephen Rotz and Suzanne Woodruff. This concert marks the Chorale’s sixth benefit concert. Over $20,000 has been raised for children’s organizations in the community through these benefit concerts. Read More»

Children will participate in Earth Day events at St.Andrew’s

Saint Andrews in the Pines Episcopal Church Day School children and the Sunday School children will plant three trees this week to celebrate Earth Day. The Sunday School children will plant a cherry tree and the Day School children will plant two dogwood trees. The trees replace those lost during the drought in the summer of 2008.

The children are in the process of learning how trees benefit by reducing carbon dioxide in the air, by giving oxygen back into the air, and by slowing water runoff after it rains reducing the surge of runoff water and erosion. Read More»

Grantville’s old-time gospel sings return to twice a month

Southern Country Gospel Singing at Grantville’s renovated Railroad Freight Depot for 2010 has returned to two Sings on each month — the fourth Friday and Saturday nights.

On Friday night, April 23, all three of the groups hail from Columbus, Ga. — Crystal River, Carolyn Wiggins, and One Accord.

On Saturday night, April 24, there will also be three groups in concert, Young Spirit from Manchester, the Carter Family from LaGrange, and the Morris Family from Eufaula, Ala. Read More»
