David William Howland, of Hampton

David William Howland, of Hampton, passed away on March 21, 2013 at the age of 70.

David was a loving and caring husband, son, father, grandfather great-grandfather, and friend who loved to spend time with his family. He was a "family leader," always there for those that he loved, but also a successful businessman.

David was a hard worker with the highest character and a tremendous work ethic. He served for 12 years as the Plant Manager for the Maxxis International Corporation.

Holy Trinity K of C will participate in Stations of the Cross this year

Holy Trinity Church Knights of Columbus Council 8081 continues with a long standing tradition of helping out with the church activities. One of the council’s yearly favorite projects is to participate in the stations of the cross.

Each of 14 Knights mans a station position describing the meaning of the station and leading the prayers for that station. The ceremony is accompanied by a full dress choir.

Each week a different church group leads the stations of the cross.

Good Shepherd Baptist is celebrating five years of faith

The Church of the Good Shepherd-Baptist in South Fulton County is celebrating five years of service to the community. Dr. Matthew V. Johnson Sr., pastor, founded the church to provide a worship experience “free of false promises” and a Bible Study “where the unadulterated Word of God is taught with truth and conviction.”

Johnson says, “At Good Shepherd, you don’t have to sacrifice your intellect on the altar of your faith.” Read More»

Dayton Calhoun, III

Dayton Calhoun, III, 68, of Hogansville, Ga. died Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, Newnan, Ga.

Mr. Calhoun was born Dec. 31, 1944 in Hamilton, Ga., son of the late Dayton Calhoun, Jr. and Lou Burleson Calhoun. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam, and a member of Glennville Baptist Church, Glennville, Ga.

Mary Ruth Hanson, age 74, of Brooks

Mrs. Mary Ruth Hanson, age 74 of Brooks, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at the Fayette Community Hospital.

Mrs. Hanson was born July 30, 1938 in Brooks to the late Wilson Haynes and the late Leola Dingler Haynes. She was a member of Brooks United Methodist Church. She retired from the City of Brooks where she served as City Clerk for over 20 years and served on Brooks City Counsel a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Hanson. Comparing commissioners’ words and positions then and now

After having recently served on the Fayette County Board of Commissioners, I was frankly astounded by the contents of the various stories and letters involving Commission Chairman Steve Brown that were included in the March 13th edition of The Citizen.

After reading the paper, I was for some reason transported back in time to my high school days when I was required to read George Orwell’s book, “1984.” It seems that I had finally found the whereabouts of the Ministry of Truth after all of these years. Read More»

Jeff Anderson concert planned at Vineyard
The Senoia Vineyard is hosting a Jeff Anderson benefit concert on March 20 at 7 p.m. to help support a student mission trip to Costa Rica.  The concert is free but the church requests donations for the mission trip. The Chicago Eatery will prepare hot dogs from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. to help support mission as well. The concert will be held at The Hill, 2450 Ga. Hwy. 85 in Senoia.
