Clayton State University economic impact: $252.4 million, 2,311 jobs

A newly released report states that the combined economic impact of the University System of Georgia’s (USG) 35 institutions on their host communities reached $13.2 billion in Fiscal Year 2011, which is five percent higher than the $12.6 billion reported for FY 2010. 

The FY 2011 study found that Georgia’s public university system generated nearly 132,000 jobs, or more than three percent of all the nonfarm jobs that exist in Georgia. The bottom line is that one job out of every 29 in the State of Georgia is due to the University System. Read More»

Several members of the youth group from Rolling Hills Baptist Church battled the summer heat recently as they conducted a “Monday Mission” at Marnelle Mobile Home Park, helping with yard work and clean up at the home of an elderly and disabled resident. Because of health and mobility reasons, the resident is unable to tend to her own yard. So the youth took care of everything for her — mowing, raking, pulling weeds, and cleaning out a trailer full of miscellaneous stuff that needed to be disposed of. Read More»

Brooks UMC currently offering various fitness classes

Brooks United Methodist Church now offers fitness classes in the gym. Current lasses are Group Personal Training and Zumba. In August the church will begin offering Yoga and Tai Chi.

Group Personal Training classes are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 – 9:45 a.m.

Zumba Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Yoga will be on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. – noon and Tai Chai will be on Monday from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. There will be a free Tai Chi demo class on July 26 at 7:30 pm. Read More»

Although Clayton State University’s world-famous Spivey Hall is best known for the highest level of musical expertise, the Sacred Harp/Shape-Note Singing School, held this year on Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14, is an event that emphasizes participation under the instruction of clinician Nathan Rees.
