Brooks will host Fall festival Oct. 28

Brooks United Methodist Church invites the community to its Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 5 – 6:30 pm.

Kids are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes and bring their trick o’ treat bags for a fun evening of trunk o’ treating, hay rides, pony rides, games and food. All activities are free and will run from 5 – 6:30 pm. A soup and hotdog supper will be served and monetary donations will be accepted for it. Read More»

Geneva Green Cook of College Park

Mrs. Geneva Green Cook of College Park passed away October 15, 2012.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cook and her first husband, Edward R. Ponatoski, Sr.

Mrs. Cook is survived by her daughters, Linda Smith and her husband Richard of Tyrone; Karen Vogtner and her husband John of Peachtree City; son, Edward R. Ponatoski and his wife Angela of Annapolis, Md.; sister, Shirley Demarest and her husband Jack of Marietta; step-sons, Joe Cook of Palmetto; Mark Cook and his wife Marsha of Sharpsburg; 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Brooks UMC adds two more classes to its fitness program

Brooks UMC has been offering Zumba and group personal training. Those have been so popular that Tai Chi has been added on Monday and Thursday evenings and now Yoga-lates on Tuesday and Thursdays at 11 a.m.

Yoga-lates is a class fusion that implements the practices of Yoga and Pilates. This class is designed with everyone in mind and suits all levels. The class can increase flexibility and muscle strength, as well as breathing and relaxation techniques. A personal mat is suggested. Monthly passes are $35 and the drop in rate is $8 per class. Charter schools amendment on ballot draws heat

Long-time Georgia political commentator and GeorgiaInsight.org creator Sue Ella Deadwyler had her sights set Monday night on the defeat of the charter schools amendment that will go before voters on Nov. 6.

The main thrust of Deadwyler’s comments before approximately 50 people at the Harvest Christian Community Center in Fayetteville dealt with her position that charter schools are unconstitutional and that they compromise the local control of boards of education. Read More»

Even after tax defeat, Atlanta has lot going for it

While the recent defeat of the transportation referendum was not well received by Wall Street, the defeat was not the “second coming of Sherman” to metro Atlanta.

Yes, we still have a significant transportation funding challenge that must be addressed; and addressed quickly. But the metro Atlanta region should continue to attract investment during the coming years while we seek a long-term transportation funding solution. Hopewell United Methodist Church will host a 5th Quarter Bonfire after the Sandy Creek homecoming game on Oct. 12.
