A plea to help Booth Middle School science stars go to Olympiad

When you think about what creates quality of life in Fayette County, the school system has to be part of your equation.

Our school system has been able to attract excellent quality faculty, people who are passionate about what they do. I have seen the quality first hand.

In my time volunteering at J.C. Booth Middle School in Peachtree City, I have reviewed the strong testing results and read the student surveys where a significant majority of the students find the school an enjoyable place to learn. Read More»

Hopewell’s Chick-N-Que is Saturday

Tyrone’s Hopewell United Methodist Church will hold its annual Chick-N-Que on Saturday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $7.50.

The meal cosists of a barbecued chicken half, coleslaw, baked beans, bread, and iced tea. In addition to the Chick-N-Que, there will also be a yard sale and a bake sale, and the youth will sponsor a car wash from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Square Foot Ministry’s yard sale is this Saturday

Square Foot Ministry (SFM), a ministry of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church (FFUMC) and local non-profit organization, is seeking donated items for its annual yard sale planned for Saturday, May 21. The yard sale will be in the parking lot and Family Life Center of FFUMC from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday only.

Items that will be accepted include furniture, books, jewelry., small appliances, knick-knacks, toys, linens, sporting equipment and household goods in good, saleable condition. Read More»

Whitewater senior, other Heritage Christian members head for Haiti

Despite the U.S. State Departments travel warnings about Haiti, Whitewater High senior Graham Geyer decided not to let the warnings deter his spring break plans. Geyer along with four adults from the Fayette County area traveled to Port-au-Prince as part of a fact-finding mission for an upcoming mission trip in June.

“We went there to visit the orphanage and see the “tent city” we are going to be working at in June,” Geyer said, “The orphanage has 120 children and about half of the kids have mild to severe disabilities and the tent city is filled with children. It’s very sad.” Read More»

The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Piester of Chatham, N.Y., and Helen Hartman of Morgantown, Pa., and the late Robert Hartman. She is a graduate of The University of Georgia, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biological science. Johnny N. Head, 73, of Peachtree City, died Sunday, May 15, 2011 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

Ms. Betty Joe Howell, 86, of Fayetteville, passed away on May 12, 2011.

Ms. Howell was born on June 7, 1924 in Sycamore, GA, to the late Giles and Bessie Webb. During WWII, she served with the American Red Cross at Cochran Field in Macon, GA.
