Coat drive a success for local scout

Starr's Mill High School's Ray Loya as part of an Eagle Scout project spearheaded an effort collected 415 coats and blankets for homeless men and families in downtown Atlanta.

For his Eagle Scout project, Ray Loya decided to warm the hearts of people down on their luck, people who had no place to go.

And by all measures he succeeded and then some, providing 415 blankets and jackets to homeless men and families in downtown Atlanta. His initial goal was 300.

Loya came up with the idea because his church does outreach programs in Atlanta, serving food to the homeless, and he knew there weren’t many jackets to hand out. Read More»

PTC has 71 apply for city manager job

Peachtree City has received 71 applications from across the country for its vacant city manager position, according to interim City Manager Nikki Vrana.

Those applications are being narrowed down by a committee that includes Vrana, the city attorney, the city’s human resources administrator and also Tom Hall, the city manager from LaGrange.

The committee plans to do interviews the week of Jan. 10 with the “short list” of candidates, Vrana said. Then the committee will narrow the field to about four candidates, she added. Read More»

PTC cops to get eight new rides

Peachtree City police will get eight new patrol vehicles, but a request to use leftover savings to buy a previously-delayed motorcycle was denied unanimously by the City Council last week.

The city will spend $148,546 for seven Ford Crown Victoria patrol cars, another $25,366 for a Chevy Tahoe patrol vehicle and another $97,329 to add the needed aftermarket equipment to each, including cameras and radios. Read More»

Thieves rob multiple storage units in Tyrone

A pre-Christmas theft at the Shamrock Storage facility on Senoia Road in Tyrone left the locks cut on 64 storage units and the owners of many of those units robbed of some of their belongings.

Tyrone Police Det. Dean Johnson said the thefts occurred sometime between the night of Dec. 22 and the morning of Dec. 23. He said the thieves gained access to the property by cutting the fence on the side of the property adjacent to Crumpton’s Furniture. Read More»

Tyrone Post Office to be named for Robert Collins

It was an honor that not many receive. Congress last week in one of its final acts of 2010 approved the naming of the Tyrone Post Office in honor of 1st Lt. Robert Wilson Collins of Tyrone, who died April 7 in Mosul, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Read More»

PTC trims cost of new fire truck after bids come in high

When bids for a new fire engine came in at $20,000 over Peachtree City’s budgeted amount, there was a decision to be made.

Instead of asking the City Council for more money, the committee of personnel who developed the specifications went back to the drawing board with a scalpel. They cut or scaled back items from the vehicle to get several thousand dollars below the budgeted amount.

The city will pay $506,232 for the new pumper-rescue truck, with the remaining $7,000 in savings needed to add tools, equipment and the radio system for the truck. Read More»
