Main roads in better shape as temps rise above freezing today

UPDATED 11:33 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 11 — The worst may be behind us in Ice Storm 2011 as a combination of road crew efforts and rising temperatures melt away much of the icy coating on main roads in Fayette County.

While schools, government offices and a majority of businesses remain closed for the second straight day after an accumulation of 1 to 3 inches of snow, then ice, brought normal operations to a halt, state highways 54 and 85 were easily passable at 11 a.m. today. Read More»

DOT warns of ice on 54 near hospital

The Georgia Department of Transportation is warning motorists about icy spots along Ga. Highway 54 near Piedmont Fayette Hospital in its latest update of road conditions in the region south of Atlanta.

DOT officials are urging the public to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary until the weather conditions improve, as freezing temperatures are expected to remain overnight, leaving roads quite treacherous tomorrow morning.

3 cuffed for botched robbery in Fayetteville

Fayetteville police early Sunday morning arrested three men who attempted to rob a local couple, police said.

The victims, who own an Asian restaurant in East Point, were apparently followed home and were confronted by two of the three suspects who demanded money, police said. The male victim then gave chase, forcing both suspects to flee to their vehicle. Read More»

Gunman fires shots at north Fayette gas station

Clerk grazed by shot, search on for suspect

Fayette County sheriff’s deputies are looking for a black man who shot a clerk at the BP/Amoco gas station at the intersection of Ga. highways 138 and 279 around 2:15 today.

The suspect was described as 6 feet tall wearing a black coat and carrying a black handgun.

The gunman also had forced the clerk into the store bathroom and threatened the clerk, according to initial reports of the incident.

The suspect left the store on foot and was believed to be on Ga. Highway 85 headed toward Hwy. 85 and Clayton County, officials said. Read More»

Fayetteville city court closed Tuesday

Fayetteville's Muncipal Court will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 11 due to the inclement weather, officials announced today.

City officials will make a determination Tuesday regarding the scheduled court session for Wednesday also also for future rescheduling.
