F’ville ahead of the game on ‘09 audit

The Fayetteville City Council at the Feb. 18 meeting got a look at the audit for the fiscal year ending July 31 and approved a minor change to the purchasing ordinance.

Mauldin & Jenkins representative Miller Edwards in the audit review said total general fund revenues increased to $10.12 million, a difference of nearly $650,000 over last year’s total of $9.4754 million. Most notable were the increases in fines and forfeitures and intergovernmental revenues, for a combined total of $745,000, and a decrease in sales tax revenues of $240,000, Edwards said. Read More»

Fayette to consider code violation fees

With more vacant homes in Fayette County due to foreclosures, the county’s building permit and inspection office has seen an uptick in inspection requests for code violation citations.

Department Director Joe Scarborough said some of the homes have overgrown grass and shrubs, or they’ve been vandalized, and others have pools that aren’t maintained and have stagnant water.

Currently the county doesn’t charge a fee for violations of the property maintenance code, even for violators who fail to fix the issue and must be taken to court. But that may change in the near future. Read More»

Forshee to take job in Athens

It has been nearly four years since Matt Forshee moved to Fayette County to lead its economic development efforts. Forshee will continue to serve as CEO of the Development Authority until March 31 when he will become president of the Athens Economic Development Foundation.

Forshee came to Fayette County in the early summer of 2006 from Oconee County where he began work as a land planner and was later given responsibility for Oconee’s economic development efforts. Read More»

Return of value deadline nears

Fayette County property owners wishing to file a “return of value” have until April 1 to get it done. The filing is open to property owners who disagree with the value placed on their properties last year.

Tax Assessor Joel Benton said tax assessment notices coming in May will only be sent if the fair market value property has changed since last year. Benton said assessment notices are expected to be mailed May 3, adding that those notices will be sent only if the property is determined to have increased in value or unless new legislation requires it. Emily Elizabeth Caldwell Rhodes, Fayetteville, died Feb. 21, 2010. She received her master’s degree from North Georgia College. She had worked with Georgia Mountain Crafts in Gainesville, and was retired from Hall County's Sardis Church Elementary School. Myra Ann Crews, 81, Fayetteville, died Feb. 20, 2010. She was born Aug. 12, 1928 in Fayette County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny I. and Irene Rowland Goodman, her husband of 33 years, Lewis Sandford Crews, brothers, Grady Goodman, Rowland Goodman, Bill Goodman, Dorsey Goodman, Hershall Goodman, and Johnny Goodman, and sisters, Sadie Eubanks, Julia Perry, and Doris Williams. B. Hugh Smith, 86

B. Hugh Smith, 86, Peachtree City, died Feb. 19, 2010. He was born in Rico, Ga. He served in the United States Navy in World War II. He was retired from Life and Casualty Insurance Company and then worked as a home inspector for Fayette State Bank and the Bank of America. He was a former member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church having served as a deacon and Sunday school superintendent.
