Eagle Scouts build outdoor dog run for Fayette Animal Shelter

Eagle Scouts team up to build an outdoor fenced area for the shelter dogs to exercise at the Fayette County Animal Shelter. Athletes showcase skills at Special Olympics

Fayette’s special athletes demonstrated their skills and sportsmanship at the annual Fayette County Special Olympic Games held Friday at Starr’s Mill High.

Over 230 Olympians from the county’s public schools and the Joseph Sams School converged on the field of the Starr’s Mill High stadium to participate in various sporting events. Read More»

Mr. Lyman Jack Collins, 98, of Fayetteville

Mr. Lyman Jack Collins, 98, of Fayetteville, passed away on March 18, 2011.

Mr. Collins was born in Rico, GA on March 24, 1912 to the late Aaron and Laura Collins. He proudly served two tours of duty during World War II with the Black Hawk Division, one in the Pacific and one in Europe. After 40 years of dedicated service, he retired from Arrow Shirt Company.

Mr. Collins is preceded in death by his wife Evelyn Collins and daughter Jan Larry.

He is survived by his sister Rubye Barnes of Fayetteville ; grandchildren Christopher Larry and Brad Jones; several nieces and nephews. Read More»

Fayette elementary schools are powered up for 20th Power Parade

Fayette County elementary students are getting powered up for the Fayette Youth Protection Home’s 20th annual Power Parade. Since 1991, Fayette County school children have raised thousands of dollars to support children their own age who have been the victims of abuse, neglect or other tragic circumstances. Fayette Youth Protection Homes, Inc. (FYPH) provides services for children who have been displaced from their homes. Children are provided housing in a home owned by FYPH in Brooks, Ga. Read More»

Whitewater High School band students go to 'State'

Eight members of the Whitewater High School Band program were named to the 2011 Georgia Music Educator’s Association All-State Band/Orchestra. Laura Dudley (French Horn), Carly Grayson (Flute), Lauren Milner (French Horn), Amy Melton (French Horn), Jay Newsome (Saxophone), Anna Rainwater (French Horn) and Kyle Vice (Trumpet) traveled to Savannah to rehearse and perform with these groups in early March.

More than 3,000 students from across Georgia audition for these All-State Ensembles and must pass through two rigorous and competitive auditions before being selected.

Bryan Adams to play 'The Fred' in August

The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphotheater will play host to one of the world’s most highly acclaimed musicians on Friday, Aug. 5. Bryan Adams The Bare Bones Tour is the sixth concert in the BMW of South Atlanta summer concert series, with the other five announced in early February. The previous five concerts include Kenny G Heart and Soul Tour, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, Jo Dee Messina with special guest Jimmy Wayne, Kool and the Gang and 10,000 Maniacs with Edwin McCain. PTC OK’s $29K fix for ice-storm-damaged tennis courts

If not repaired, city stood to lose national tourney in May

January’s ice storms have done a real number on six outdoor courts at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.

Thursday night the City Council authorized spending just under $30,000 to repair, resurface and restripe the courts.

City Leisure Services Director Randy Gaddo said ice from the storm caused hairline cracks on the courts to expand to one inch wide and up.

The city had not anticipated a need to do the work on the remaining six damaged courts, Gaddo said. Read More»
