Friends Mentors honored at annual breakfast

Just showing up is the most important part of what some 200 adults and high school students do each week. They reach out to help children in the Fayette County Public School System who are struggling academically or socially, in danger of failing their grade, or may not graduate from school.
They are volunteers in the school system’s Friends Mentoring Program who were honored for sharing their time and talents with others during the second annual Friends Mentoring Program Appreciation Breakfast. Read More»

Fayetteville named a 'Best Neighborhood for the Money'

A recent survey compiled by NeighborhoodScout.com and reported by walletpop.com looked at that nation’s 20 largest metro areas to determine the Best Neighborhoods for the Money. And in the sprawling region of metro Atlanta it was Fayetteville that was selected.

The north side of the city was the target area where the median house values were listed at $235,695 compared to a cost of $420,399 in comparable premium neighborhoods in other cities in metro Atlanta, according to the survey. The discount price for a home in Fayetteville averaged 44 percent, according to the survey. Read More»

F’ville council approves 90-day moratorium on pawn shops

The brief agenda at the May 6 meeting of the Fayetteville City Council included the imposition of a 90-day moratorium on permitting or licensing pawn shops and the transfer of $19,000 to the Downtown Development Authority’s (DDA) regular account.

City senior planner Linwood Robinson said that recent inquiries related to pawn shops led to the need to have the current ordinance clarify the zoning districts where the shops could be located. Read More»

Bus driver takes top spot in local Roade-O

Imagine steering a school bus in and out of five cones set at a close proximity and then doing it again, backwards, without stopping or bumping the markers. This and other grueling tests is what Jimmy Poole, driver of special needs bus #42, had to successfully complete to take first place in Fayette’s School Bus Roade-O competition last month.

Poole’s first place victory secures him a place in the statewide competition June 8 in Warner Robins. Joining him will be second place winner Kathy Warden and third place winner Sherry Harris. Read More»

Traffic stop nets small amount of cocaine

The failure by an Atlanta man May 6 to stop at a stop sign at White Road and Heritage Lake Drive resulted in drug charges for three grams of cocaine and less than an ounce of marijuana.

Justin J. Shealy, 20, was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign, less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute for the three grams of suspected cocaine in two small bags found in his center console, said Fayetteville Police spokesperson Steve Crawshaw. D74 Salon completes first month and now carries Ouidad and Retrohair lines

D’imension Seventy Four Salon (D74) opened at Wisdom Pointe on March 1, and just completed a great first month.
