New Tyrone fire station design unveiled

The Fayette County Commission got its first look at architectural renderings for the new fire station that will serve the Tyrone area.

The fire station is being moved to the intersection of Ga. Highway 74 north at Jenkins Road adjacent to a church and also the local school complex, officials have said.

The new station will replace the current fire station in downtown Tyrone which has had significant problems with its septic system in recent years. The new station, however, will be connected to the town’s limited sewer system. Read More»

Tyrone adopts low tax rate again this year

When it comes to avoiding property tax increases or avoiding tax rollups to make up for lower property values due to the recession, Tyrone is the place to be. The Tyrone Town Council on Aug. 30 held firm on the millage rate again this year. The council voted to use available reserves to make up the $113,000 decrease in tax revenue from the falling tax digest and leave the millage rate at 2.889 mills. Read More»

Sales tax negotiations at stalemate, court will decide portions

Unable to come to an agreement on the distribution formula for the county’s local option sales tax, government officials representing the county commission and the city councils of Peachtree City, Fayetteville and Tyrone are taking the matter to court.

In a joint petition filed Friday, all parties are seeking a final decision to be made by a Superior Court judge. Read More»

Feds raid Tyrone pain clinic

There were reports on Aug. 23 of federal agents raiding a number of pain clinics in metro Atlanta on Wednesday, including one in Tyrone.

Asked about a raid in Tyrone, Police Chief Brandon Perkins confirmed that on Wednesday a search warrant was served by federal agents at a medical office on Swanson Road and that an unnamed individual was taken into custody by federal agents. Read More»

Both teams start the 2012 season next week, while Whitewater is the only local team kicking off this Friday night. UPDATED for print, 08-15-12 — Sheriff’s investigators are continuing to work leads and analyze evidence relating to the Friday morning murder of a 44-year-old disabled Fayette woman at her grandmother’s home north of Tyrone and close to the Fulton County line.

Donna Denise Roberts, 44, was shot to death by a burglar who was discovered in the home when Roberts and her 78-year-old grandmother returned from running errands, officials said. The shot was fired as the suspect’s silver or gray passenger car fled the scene, officials said. Read More»

Tyrone officer walks away from wrecked patrol car in high-speed chase

A Sunday afternoon traffic accident on Ga. Highway 74 in Tyrone involving a police patrol car and an SUV resulted in the two drivers being treated and released from area hospitals and the driver of the SUV charged. The Tyrone officer was chasing a speeder on Hwy. 74 when the accident occurred, causing his patrol vehicle to barrel-roll. Lt.
