Roads continue to be slippery; multiple stores closed

Best advice may be to stay home as officers direct sand trucks to slick spots on roads, streets

With ice and snow clogging local streets and a number of Fayette highways facing the same fate, citizens are being advised to stay home except for an emergency.

Ga. Highways 92, 279 and 85 have a number of icy spots, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. A number of Fayette residents reported on Facebook that it took seven hours or more for their commute home yesterday afternoon, with some stretching past the 12-hour mark. Read More»

Tyrone mayor: crime down, economy up

It was a look behind and a look ahead for Tyrone Mayor Eric Dial as he delivered the 2014 State of the Town address at the Jan. 16 meeting of the Tyrone Town Council. Dial suggested that conditions that led to a successful 2013 are in place to make 2014 a time of increased opportunity.

Hopewell’s ‘Wednesday Nite Out’ program starts tonight

Hopewell United Methodist Church in Tyrone will offer a Wednesday night program for children, youth, and adults beginning tonight, Jan. 22.

The adults will have Bible study while the children and youth engage in their programs.

The program will run twice a month, on the first and fourth Wednesday, in conjunction with Wednesday Night Suppers. Meals will be served at 5:45 p.m. and the program will run from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.

Dogwood Church, 975 Ga. Hwy. 74 South in Tyrone, will offer a GriefShare support group held from 7- 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings beginning Jan. 8.

The group will meet in the atrium area of the church office.

“GriefShare is a 13-week program led by friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences,” a spokesperson said. “You don’t have to go through the grieving process alone.” Read More»

Departments adopt open roads policy

A policy adopted by state agencies more than two years ago is finally making its way to city and county traffic enforcement agencies in Georgia. Contacted about their compliance with the Georgia Open Roads policy, all Fayette County law enforcement agencies said the policy that calls for quickly clearing roadways for traffic after accidents is already part of their operational procedure. Flat Rock musicians have holiday spirit

The Flat Rock Chapter of Tri-M, a musical Honor Society, recently spent money earned by members throughout the year to support local families in need. The group recently took a trip to Wal-Mart to spend the $3,350 they earned through after school sales of snacks. “We bought food and gift cards for 24 Flat Rock families in need,” said Tri-M director and orchestra teacher Kelly Gallman. Each group of kids and parents had a $60 budget to buy non-perishable food items for a family. Each group bought food for three families. Read More»
