Tyrone approves business park plan

The Tyrone Planning Commission on Feb. 28 gave unanimous approval to a preliminary plat consisting of 40.86 acres that will be the site of the Hobgood Business Park. The site is part of a larger tract of more than 300 acres on the town’s north side situated on the west side of Ga. Tyrone chief decries changes to seizure laws

Tyrone Police Chief Brandon Perkins is concerned about proposed state legislation that would make it more difficult for law enforcement to seize cash, cars and other property used in the drug trade.

In a letter to Tyrone residents, Perkins notes that such seizures are one of the best ways to hit drug dealers where it hurts most: in their wallet. Because many drug offenders only serve two or three years in prison, going after the money produced by their organizations is one of the most effective ways to combat drug criminals, Perkins wrote. Allen Anderson Jackson, age 91, of Tyrone

Mr. Allen Anderson Jackson, age 91, of Tyrone, Ga. passed away on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at Piedmont Fayette Hospital in Fayetteville, Ga. after a short illness.

He was born in White Plains, Ga. on Aug. 5, 1921 to the late Arthur and Estelle Anderson.

He is also preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Hart Jackson and a daughter Angie Jackson.

He is survived by a son, Robert Jackson, and his grandchildren; Brook and Chris Mullins of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Brad Jackson of China. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Read More»

Martha Reid, age 89, of Tyrone

Mrs. Martha Reid, born July 5, 1923, of Tyrone passed away Feb. 17, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Reid; son, Mike Reid and is survived by her sons, Jerald Reid of Fayetteville; Spencer Reid and his wife Diane of Hampton; Vick Reid and his wife Shelly of Tyrone; daughter-in-law, Marie Reid of Fayetteville; 19 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Tyrone middle school student robbed by older kids

A Tyrone middle school student reported that five older students robbed him Feb. 11 as he was walking home from school. Local law enforcement is treating the incident as an armed robbery.

Fayette County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Josh Shelton said the middle school student after the incident told his mother he had been walking home from the school complex on Jenkins Road when five white males believe d to be high school students came out of a wooded area, approached him from behind then pushed him to the ground. Sandy Creek Patriots receive national recognition

On Friday representatives from MaxPreps sports came to present head Coach Chip Walker and the Sandy Creek Patriots varsity football team with a Tour of Champions trophy. The Patriots are ranked third in the state of Georgia and 88 overall in the nation out of 17,000 schools. Tyrone saw 25% decrease in serious crime in 2012

To keep school open, Tyrone Council would help with sewer line

There is a new wrinkle in the idea of keeping Tyrone Elementary School open in the face of potential school closures by the Fayette County Board of Education. Though no vote has been taken, members of the Tyrone Town Council are giving unanimous support to having the town participate financially in the cost of installing a sewer line to the school from the Southampton subdivision less than a mile to the north. Marjorie Florene Barnett Burel, age 83, of Tyrone

Marjorie Florene Barnett Burel, age 83, of Tyrone, Ga. died Monday, Jan. 28, 2013.

She was born in Hapeville, Ga. to the late Phillip Hansel and Julia Kidd Barnett.

She was preceeded in death by her husband of 60 years, the late Raymond J. Burel. Marjorie was a devoted wife, mother, Nannie and a life-long member of Hapeville First Baptist Church. She loved God and her family. She worked for Delta Air Lines then several government agencies ending up at Fort McPherson before quitting in the late 60's to become a full-time housewife and mother.
