F'ville's Whitlow named Ga. VFW Officer of Year

Describing it as “one of the greatest honors of my life,” Fayetteville Police Det. Mike Whitlow last weekend received recognition at the annual Georgia Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) conference in Macon as the Georgia VFW Peace Officer of the Year.

Whitlow was selected as Peace Officer of the Year for 2010 by the Riverdale VFW chapter and was presented the award before the Fayetteville City Council earlier this month. Read More»

Church of Nativity youth spaghetti dinner is tonight

Young people at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity will serve a spaghetti dinner Wednesday, Feb. 16, to raise funds for a youth mission trip in June.

The benefit event is billed as “Mama Rita’s Italian Kitchen” in honor of the Rev. Rita Henault, rector of the parish. Mr. Arthur Brooke Ballard, Sr., age 91, passed away Wednesday, February 2, 2011. Mr. Ballard was born Sept. 1, 1919 in Fulton County.

Mr. Ballard was a long-time member of The Rock Baptist Church in Fayetteville.

He was preceded in death by his son, Arthur B. Ballard, Jr. and is survived by his wife of 72 years, Dolly Ballard of Fayetteville; sons, William Richard (Bill) Ballard and his wife, Betty of Tucker; Mark Ballard and his wife, Joy of Peachtree City; daughter, Jeannie Ballard Wright of Fayetteville; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 3 on the way. George William Bishop, age 91, of Fayetteville

George William Bishop, age 91, of Fayetteville, died at Henry County Medical Center on February 11, 2011.

He was born June 13, 1919 in Aucilla, FL, the son of George Thomas Bishop and Alice Eva Anderson Bishop. Mr. Bishop was preceded in death by his sister Vera Bishop Jones. Mr. Bishop was retired from Delta Airlines and he had a septic tank business for many years in the Fayette County area. He was a veteran of World War II serving in Okinawa. F'ville American Legion Post presented flag flown in Iraq

Captain Greg Adams, U.S. Navy (R) and a member of The American Legion, Fayette County Post 105, recently returned from duty in Iraq and made a presentation to his post of a U.S. flag that flew in Iraq, dedicated to Post 105. Accepting the flag is Denny Leander, Post Commander. The flag will be displayed in the Log Cabin in Fayetteville, the home of Post 105. The post meets the second Monday of each month. Right prescription: Fayetteville technician wins $250K in Mega-Millions drawing

A Fayetteville pharmacy technician has gotten a quarter-million dollar dose of a Mega Millions jackpot. Mary Smith, 58, matched the first five winning numbers in the Feb. 1 Mega Millions drawing, winning a $250,000 prize.

Smith purchased her Quik Pik ticket at Kwickie/Flash #0243, 760 Glynn St. N., Fayetteville. Winning numbers from the Feb. 1 drawing were: 16-22-23-26-35 and the Mega Ball was 31.

Smith’s husband, who purchased tickets for the same drawing, informed her that a winning ticket had been sold in the area. Read More»
