Whitewater teachers plead guilty in sex-for-hire sting

The former chorus director and the band director at Whitewater High School pled guilty last week in DeKalb County to pandering after they arranged a meeting at a hotel there with two prostitutes who were actually undercover police officers.

F’ville police investigating sexual assault claim

Fayetteville police are investigating a claim by two teenage girls that an adult male acquaintance gave them pills in order to take advantage of them and had attempted to do so.

Details of the incident are not available, but Maj. Kevin Gooding said the incident is alleged to have happened Jan. 15 and was reported to police by a parent of one of the girls when the two were being examined at Piedmot Fayette Hospital. Read More»

Bank robbers leave money trail; some customers grab cash

Fayetteville police are still searching for two armed men who robbed the Bank of America at Ga. Highway 314 and New Hope Road near the Fayette Pavilion early Saturday afternoon. Prayers, help sought for Brooks crash victim

A Brooks resident who was in a serious car crash Dec. 23 remains in a coma at The Shepherd Center, but the community is rallying with prayers and financial support, a family friend told The Citizen.
Candice Smith, 19, was flown to Grady Hospital immediately after the crash on Ga. Highway 16 near Huckabee Road. After two weeks, she was transferred to Shepherd, which focuses on the treatment of spinal cord and brain injuries.
Family friends have reported signs of progress in Candice’s recovery and they are asking for continued prayers for her healing. Read More»

Man carjacked along Redwine Road

A Fayette County man was carjacked last week near Redwine Road after being followed from his business on Old National Highway. The man was not injured in the incident.

The carjacking occurred after the delicatessen owner left his business on Jan. 7 between 9:30-10:00 p.m. to go home, said Fayetteville Police spokesperson Steve Crawshaw.

The man told investigators that, at some point, he began to suspect that a car was following him, Crawshaw said. The carjacking occurred after the man turned onto a dead-end street off Redwine Road to turn around, said Crawshaw. Read More»

F’ville wants legislative approval for redevelopment

Let the voters have their say on some specialized new uses for existing property taxes, says the Fayetteville City Council.

The council on Jan. 7 officially asked the Fayette County legislative delegation to push a local law for a referendum on three Tax Allocation District (TAD) projects identified in 2009. The Fayette County Commission and the Fayette County School Board have to approve specific TAD projects.

City Manager Joe Morton said Monday the city is moving forward with the request and has spoken with Rep. Virgil Fludd and Rep. Matt Ramsey about introducing the legislation. Read More»
