$25,000 reward in postal robbery

The United States Postal Service is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of two men who robbed a postal service contract truck driver at the Fayetteville Post Office Friday night.

U.S. Postal Inspectors are asking anyone who was at the post office between 6:30 and 7:30 to contact them at 1-877-876-2455. Witnesses may have unwittingly noticed something that could help with the case, said spokesperson Yulanda Burns.

Crash involving sheriff’s wife to be reviewed

Sheriff’s Capt. Deborah Hannah was responding to a burglar alarm at her own home the afternoon of Jan. 2 when her sport utility vehicle collided with another car, sheriff’s officials said.

The crash injured both Capt. Hannah, the driver of the car and the driver’s 4-year-old daughter, though their injuries were reportedly not life-threatening. Meanwhile the burglar alarm was later found to have been a false alarm, sheriff’s officials said. Read More»

F’ville to hear ordinance proposal Thursday

The Fayetteville City Council will take up a change to the purchasing ordinance and consider an improvement to the Lee Street sidewalk project at the Feb. 6 council meeting.

The council will hear the first reading of proposed changes to provide a consistent set of guidelines for administering purchasing procedures.

The only essential change to the ordinance would be changing “city council” to “governing body” to allow the Downtown Development Board and Main Street Tourism Board to fully utilize the city’s purchasing manual, said assistant finance director Ellen Walls. Read More»

Wynn Hopper Cupertino, 86, Fayetteville, died Jan. 23, 2010. She was born Oct. 12, 1923 in Ridewood, N.J. She was preceded in death by a son, Jay Whitten, and a daughter, Sandra Elizabeth Whitten. David Wesley Redmond Sr., 63, Fayetteville, died Jan. 24, 2010 due to pancreatic cancer. He was born Jan. 13, 1947 in Belzoni, Miss. and was the youngest of four children. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Mary Hawkins Redmond, and older brothers, Charles and James. He was graduated from McNair High School in Belzoni in 1965 and was the first in his family to earn a college degree. Richard Lamar Saylors II, 27, Brooks, died Jan. 30, 2010. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and spend time with his dogs. He also enjoyed time with his family and girlfriend, Arisha Rives. He attended Starr's Mill High School before beginning his career in the construction industry. Services were at the Carl J. National Heights Baptist will host Donna Kirby at Monday luncheon

The National Heights Baptist Church Senior Adults will host guest speaker Donna Kirby, a retired Southern Baptist missionary, at a luncheon Monday, Feb. 8, at 11:30 a.m.

During her 36 years of international mission service in east Asia - Hong Kong, Kirby taught English as a Second Language (ESL) and Bible at a Chinese high school and later served as a church developer and planter.
