SFM readies for spring yard sale

Square Foot Ministries is now accepting items for its annual yard sale set for sometime this spring.

Items being accepted include furniture, books, jewelry, small appliances. knick knacks, toys, children’s shoes and clothing, linens, sporting equipment and household goods in good, saleable condition. Adult clothing and mattresses/box springs will not be accepted.

SAGE headed for Junaluska

The SAGE group (seniors) at Fayetteville first UMC will spend March 14-16 at Lake Junaluska, staying at the Lambuth Inn, touring the United Methodist World Museum, and sightseeing in Waynesville.

Cost is $130 per person for a double room or $200 single.

Sarah Lousie Threadgill 

Sarah Louise Threadgill, 87, Fayetteville, died Feb. 4, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and three sisters. She was an active member of Fayette Presbyterian Church and a founder of the "Memorial Garden" at the church. Services were at the Fayette Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Cliff Haddox officiating. Students up 16%, school budget up 68%

F’ville post office installs safety fixes after robbery

Postal inspectors are continuing to investigate the Jan. 29 robbery of a postal truck driver at the Fayetteville Post Office.

Meanwhile, postal officials have corrected several “areas of vulnerability” that were revealed by a risk assessment in the wake of the robbery, said Postal Inspector Yulanda Burns.

“Any vulnerable areas that we did find were corrected for the safety of our postal employees and the safety of our customers,” Burns said. Read More»

3 F’ville IHOP parking lot robbers caught quickly

Armed robbers in the IHOP restaurant parking lot in Fayetteville Sunday night did not make it out of town before being nabbed by police. Two men and a woman were arrested after their vehicle was spotted by an officer on the way to the scene.

Twenty-six-year-old Dandre N. Pottninger of Hampton, 26-year-old Zakee S. Tolbert of Riverdale and 21-year-old Debrona Zyethia Freeman of Lithonia were all charged with robbery, possession of a handgun during the commission of a felony and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, according to Fayetteville Police spokesperson Steve Crawshaw. Final F’ville campaign contributors revealed

The final campaign contribution filing period for candidates in the races for the three Fayetteville City Council posts has ended. Here is a look at what each of the six candidates raised and where it came from.

Post 3 incumbent Walt White reported a total of $10,101.94 in campaign contributions and $10,115.58 in expenditures.

A total of $5,600 in contributions ranged from $200 to $1,000 from 14 private individuals with the $4,500 remainder coming in the form of contributions of less than $101. White also carried over $195 from his 2005 campaign. Read More»

F’ville Council OK’s 1st reading to change rule

The Fayetteville City Council at the Feb. 4 meeting heard the first reading of a change in the city’s purchasing ordinance that permits other city entities to make purchases.

The change is designed to provide a consistent set of guidelines for administering purchasing procedures. The only significant alteration to the ordinance would be changing “city council” to “governing body” to allow the Downtown Development Board and Main Street Tourism Board to fully utilize the city’s purchasing manual, said Assistant Finance Director Ellen Walls. What’s being pumped into those LP tanks?

As you well know, all of us are going through hard times; money is short. I want to know through your newspaper if anyone other than me is having problems with LP gas.

I know the weather is colder, but we are using our furnace the same amount of time, but the gas only lasts for days instead of a month like it used to, and the price per gallon is 2.89.

That means 100 gallons of LP gas cost almost $300, and for the elderly retired people who live on $600 a month, that leaves little for food and meds. Read More»
