Mr. Ralph Van Hicks, 57, of Fayetteville, died on March 13, 2010 following a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.

Van was a loving husband, father, brother and son and was the “ultimate family man.” He was active for many years in youth sports leagues in the Morrow and Lake City area. He is still affectionately known to many as “Coach Van.” He and his wife Karen owned and operated Karavan Doors for 27 years. Mr. Charles Erwin Mathias of Fayetteville died Monday, March 1, 2010.

Mr. Mathias was an IT consultant in Atlanta. He was preceded in death by his father Warren Mathias.

He is survived by his wife Brenda Mathias; sons, Clayton Ross Mathias, Casey Maxwell Mathias, Cory James Mathias, all of Fayetteville ; mother Lorene Mathias; brother Glenn Mathias, both of Plant City , FL.

Martz is new senior warden at Church of the Nativity

Anne Martz is the new senior warden of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Fayetteville. She succeeds Debbie Johnson.

Martz was appointed to the post by the the Rev. Rita Henault, rector, after the recent parish annual meeting. Fred Lusk continues as junior warden.

Rep. Fludd needs an economics lesson

Here we go again with another tax on the “evil rich.”

It seems as though Rep. Virgil Fludd has gotten marching orders from President Obama with his tax policies.

And when was the last time that the government proposed a temporary tax with the promise to repeal it at some point? Ask the voters in Richmond Hill, Ga., when their leaders proposed a “temporary” SPLOST in 1973.

Obviously, Mr. Fludd does not know the basics of economics in that when you raise taxes, revenues go down. Read More»

Citizens Police Academy starts Apr. 1 in Fayetteville

The Fayetteville Police Department is set to begin another round of its Citizens Police Academy, now in its fourth year. The academy is an effort to increase community involvement with the department and offer insight into the services it provides.

Fayetteville Police spokesperson Capt. Steve Crawshaw said the purpose of the academy is to foster better communication between citizens and police through a variety of sessions that help citizens to better understand the workings and responsibilities of the department. Read More»
