Ms. Waunetta Mae Grodeck, 78, of Fayetteville, passed away on May 15, 2011.

Ms. Grodeck is preceded in death by her parents August L. Steinke and Effie M. Hettrick Steinke; daughter Linda Lambert; grandchild Amanda Lee; three sisters; two brothers.

She is survived by her daughters Joanne (John) Romph of Fayetteville and Sandra A. Derth of Parma, OH; son Edgar A. Pape of Connecticut; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers Lawrence Steinke of Cisne, IL and Maynard Steinke Rockford, IL.

Mr. Jesse Edwin Powell of Fayetteville died May 16, 2011.

Mr. Powell was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and retired from Delta Air Lines.

He is survived by his wife Mrs. Doris Powell of Fayetteville; daughters Linda Kay Faia and her husband Robert of Isle of Palms, SC; stepchildren James Bobbitt and his wife Cathy of Peachtree City; Brenda Dover and her husband Ted of Charlotte, NC; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sister Mrs. Marie McEwen of Fitzgerald; nieces and nephews. F’ville Mayor Steele: Keep Fayette out of regional mass transit agency

If a new transit agency is created to handle bus and rail service in the Atlanta region, Fayetteville Mayor Ken Steele says he doesn’t want Fayette County to have any part in it.

Any new such agency should only have jurisdiction, and a likely sales tax, in counties that “either have transit at this time or would like to have transit,” Steele said in an interview last week.

A resolution passed last month by the metro Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable includes such language, Steele said. He added, however, that the final decision rests with the Georgia legislature. Read More»

F’ville to consider denser PCD zoning, Sunday beer and wine sales

It will be a slim but noteworthy agenda at the May 19 meeting of the Fayetteville City Council. The board will take up the issue of amending the Planned Community District (PCD) zoning ordinance to provide more open space by allowing increased density within that zoning category.

N. F’ville Chick-fil-A wants 2nd drive-thru lane

Business is booming at Chick-fil-A Dwarf House. The restaurant on North Glynn Street at Banks Crossing went before the Fayetteville Planning and Zoning Commission at the May 12 work session with a proposal to add a second drive-thru lane that will parallel the one currently in use. Square Foot Ministry’s yard sale is this Saturday

Square Foot Ministry (SFM), a ministry of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church (FFUMC) and local non-profit organization, is seeking donated items for its annual yard sale planned for Saturday, May 21. The yard sale will be in the parking lot and Family Life Center of FFUMC from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday only.

Items that will be accepted include furniture, books, jewelry., small appliances, knick-knacks, toys, linens, sporting equipment and household goods in good, saleable condition. Read More»

Ms. Betty Joe Howell, 86, of Fayetteville, passed away on May 12, 2011.

Ms. Howell was born on June 7, 1924 in Sycamore, GA, to the late Giles and Bessie Webb. During WWII, she served with the American Red Cross at Cochran Field in Macon, GA. She then married Buddy Howell of Fayetteville, GA. She was associated with the Cary Chapman Company and Dixie Bearings of Atlanta. She was a 60-year resident of Fayette County. Read More»

B’day candle sets off blaze in house fire

A house fire at 130 Nix Court near Fayetteville during the early afternoon hours May 13 resulted in heavy damage but no injuries to the two residents in the house at the time of the blaze. Firefighters at the scene learned that the cause of the fire was apparently related to a young child playing with a birthday candle.

Fayette County Fire and Emergency Services Lt. Donnie Davis said two residents were at home at the time of the blaze and called 911 to report the fire. Davis said firefighters and emergency crews from Fayette FES and the Fayetteville Fire Department responded. Read More»
