F’ville OKs 1st of big traffic fixes on Hwy. 85

$600K city-county project to extend Lafayette Ave. to Church St.

The Fayetteville City Council last week gave unanimous approval to an intergovernmental agreement with Fayette County that will use nearly $600,000 in previously collected 1-cent sales tax revenues to add a traffic signal on North Glynn Street at Lafayette Avenue and extend Lafayette to the east to intersect with Church Street some 800 feet away. Local conference will feature Christianity, science, the Bible

Heritage Church in Fayetteville will host a free conference on “Christianity, Science, and the Bible” Sept, 16-18, from 6:30 - 9 p.m. each evening.

The conference will feature Professor A.C. McIntosh of Leeds University, England, and Dr. Charles Thaxton of Peachtree City, and will be held at Heritage Church, 150 Lester Rd., Fayetteville. Refreshments will be provided.

On Thursday, Sept. 16, Thaxton (6:30) will lecture on Christianity and Science, and McIntosh (7:30) will address Design Intelligence and the Word of God. Read More»

Shirley Thomas cancer brunch, walk, planned at Edgefield Baptist

The Shirley Thomas Cancer Awareness team will host a Cancer Awareness Brunch Saturday, Sept. 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the George Porter Fellowship Hall,140 Church St., adjacent to Edgefield Baptist Church in Fayetteville.

The cost is a $10 donation. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. Read More»

Garner anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene H. Garner

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene H. Garner (Dot and Gene) of Fayetteville celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Sept. 5, 2010. They married Sept. 5, 1940 in Atlanta at the ages of 19 and 18 years old.

The Garners now reside in Fayetteville, but, since Gene worked for the air force as a quality control inspector, they have moved several times over the years. They lived in Forest Park, Marietta, Roswell, N.M., Garrison, N.D. and in Titusville, Fla. where the Air Force was hired by NASA to work on missles. Gene worked there until 1976 and retired at age 55. Read More»

Jana Gale Easley, daughter of Ms. Gwenda Easley and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Easley of Atlanta, and T.J. Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Lee of Fayetteville, announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage.

The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Tommie Strider Sr. and the late Mrs. Janice Strider, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Easley. She attended Northgate High School and the University of Georgia, where she received her bachelor’s degree in speech communications in 2005. ‘Cancer, I’m gonna beat you again in the blink of your evil eye’

On a recent afternoon, 8-year-old Mary Evelyn King piled all her stuffed animals together on the floor of her room. Then she covered them with a blanket so they wouldn’t see what was coming next.

Taking a perch high on her bed, Mary Evelyn leapt in the air, landing on the pile with a cackle of high-pitched laughter.

For someone who’s such an active child, and has such a heartwarming smile, it’s hard to imagine that Mary Evelyn has cancer ravaging the inside of her body. The neuroblastoma that has struck her attacks the nerves through the spinal cord. Read More»

Terry Lynn Long, Jr., age 27

Mr. Terry Lynn Long, Jr. (TJ) passed away Monday, September 6, 2010. TJ was 27 yrs old and attended Fayette County High School. He had been a quadriplegic since 2005. Mr. Terry Lynn Long, Jr. is survived by a daughter Bianca Garza and son Zachary Shae Sontimer. Mother, Sandra Goza Lyle and father Terry Lynn Long Sr. Sisters Christa Lyle McConnell and Faith Lyle Felth. Preceded in death brother Jason Lyle. Check with C.J. The Shoulderbone Creek Orchestra at this week's Lunch on the Lawn

Bells Across America next Friday

The James Waldrop Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution invites the public to join in the Bells Across America Celebration on September 17 at noon as the United States celebrates the 223rd anniversary of the signing of the US Constitution.  

The bell ringing will be held on the Fayetteville Square next to the flagpole at the Old County Courthouse
.  
The Marquis de Lafayette Chapter Sons of the American Revolution will provide a musket salute in honor of this historical event.
