Heat lamps cause fires and close calls

Heat lamps in use during this month’s cold temperatures were the cause of two structure fires in Coweta County. Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Jimmy Gantt urged residents to be aware the dangers associated with using the lamps for supplemental heating.

Gantt said that during the month firefighters responded to two structure fires caused by heat lamps. Though residents were unharmed, Gantt said that in one of the cases the family dog perished in the fire. Read More»

Piedmont Newnan donates $10K to Coweta schools

Piedmont Newnan Hospital last week announced that it will donate $10,000 to the Coweta County School System and other local organizations.
School system spokesperson Dean Jackson said Piedmont Newnan Hospital is showing its support for Coweta schools and students through its recent sponsorship of the Coweta County School System. Jackson said the sponsorship benefits a wide range of educational and student health and wellness programs at Coweta elementary, middle and high schools, as well as associated educational organizations. Coweta adopts new outside watering rules

The Coweta County Commission last week unanimously adopted an ordinance amendment on outside watering that will put the county in compliance with recent changes in state law. Though there are a number of exceptions included, the ordinance requires outside watering to be done between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m.

The ordinance pertains to the passage of Senate Bill 370 that was signed into law on June 1. The law requires that cities, counties and water suppliers incorporate into their ordinances the restrictions on watering outdoor landscaping. Read More»

Palmetto Youth League celebrates holidays

These are just a few of the kids participating in the Palmetto Youth League’s first Holiday Celebration held the weekend before Christmas. A mountain of gifts were presented, along with Zumba dances with Amy Jaynes, caroling with Karletta Knox and plenty of refreshments.

The youth league will also sponsor Teen Night Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. Under the direction of Tara Miller, Teen Night is a new mentoring program emphasizing leadership and other teen guidance initiatives. Read More»

Sharpsburg man pleads, owes feds $108K in taxes, interest

Sharpsburg resident Robert C. Boot earlier this month entered a guilty plea in federal court to two counts of failing to file tax returns on his 2002-2004 taxes. Boot owed $75,000 in taxes and $33,000 in interest. Read More»

Palmetto Youth League has holiday celebration

These are just a few of the kids participating in the Palmetto Youth League’s first Holiday Celebration held last weekend. A mountain of gifts were presented, along with Zumba dances with Amy Jaynes, caroling with Karletta Knox and plenty of refreshments. The youth league will also sponsor Teen NightJan. 14 at 7 p.m. Under the direction of Tara Miller, Teen Night is a new mentoring program emphasizing leadership and other teen guidance initiatives. Next summer, PYL will operate its summer camp, basketball and soccer programs. The Palmetto Youth League became operational in February 2010. Read More»
