Golden Dragon Acrobats give stunning performance

From China to New York and on to Newnan. Again. For the third time, the Golden Dragon Acrobats performed last weekend at The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts of Coweta County. The two-hour exhibition of coordination and strength was nothing short of stunning.

The Golden Dragon Acrobats team performing Sunday came with 23 team members. The ages of the male and female performers ranged from 17-22, though one team member is 31 years old. Read More»

Senoia DDA ready to renovate old police buildings

Senoia DDA Chairman Suzanne Helfman announces Tuesday that the organization is ready to begin renovating the old police department buildings on Main Street.

Senoia Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Chairman Suzanne Helfman told the City Council Monday night that the organization has closed on the old police department buildings on Main Street and is quickly proceeding with plans to renovate them. One of the buildings will house the city’s Welcome Center while the other will be leased.

DDA agreed in September to purchase the circa 1912 buildings for $27,000 and the City Council accepted the offer on a 4-1 vote. Per the agreement, DDA said it would be responsible for the rehab work that would be needed. Read More»

Senoia to consider adopting county animal ordinance

After lengthy discussions during the past two meetings the Senoia City Council on Monday voted unanimously to begin the process of scheduling public hearings that could lead to the adoption of Coweta County’s Animal Control Ordinance.

The discussion on animal control began Jan. 2 during a discussion of the city’s current ordinance and what constituted a dog kennel. But the discussion quickly led to the idea of comparing the city and county ordinance and determining which would best suit the needs of Senoia’s citizens. Read More»

Five Coweta schools receive state honors

Five of Coweta County’s elementary, middle and high schools were recognized earlier this month for achievements during the 2009-2010 school year. The honors came by way of the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement.

School system spokesperson Dean Jackson said Evans Middle School, Western Elementary School, Northgate High School, Brooks Elementary School and Arbor Springs Elementary School were all recognized by the Office of Student Achievement and the Georgia Dept. of Education for improvement and achievement during the 2009-2010 school year. Rick Puckett of Douglasville and Mrs. Cindy Farr of Newnan announce the engagement of their daughter, Jennifer Paige Puckett, to Martin Patrick Gareau, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Gareau of Cleveland, Ohio.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Ms. Hettie Ratliff of Union City and Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Puckett of Douglasville. She is a graduate of Fayette County High School and the University of Georgia.

Senoia hears plan for 88-acre residential and retail annexation on Hwy. 16

A proposal for the annexation of 88 acres along Ga. Highway 16 adjacent to Senoia’s west side has been sent to the Senoia Planning Commission for further study. The proposal calls for office/commercial and residential development on the north and south sides of the highway.

The annexation and conceptual land use proposal for the mixed-use Village West development was submitted by developer David Lindsey. Read More»

Winter storm shuts Coweta down for nearly a week

It was neighbors helping neighbors on Breckenridge Drive in the Bedford Forest subdivision off Ga. Highway 154. Jeremy Carlisle (left) and Blake Adams operated the blowers while Carol Adams (red jacket) works with youngsters Jilleyn (in pink) and Jensyn to help clear her driveway. Their work Tuesday afternoon came in the wake of the winter storm that began Sunday and closed schools and most businesses in Coweta County and metro Atlanta on Monday and Tuesday.

What a week. What started last Sunday with warnings from the National Weather Service turned out to be exactly what was forecast: a major winter storm that essentially paralyzed Coweta County and all of north Georgia for much of the week.
