Arnold Lamar Hasty Sr.

Arnold Lamar Hasty Sr. 78, Senoia, died Jan. 28, 2010. He was a former mayor of Riverdale. He was preceded in death by brothers, Alex Hasty, and Bill Hasty. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with interment at the Senoia City Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Juanita Hasty, Senoia; sons, Lamar and Glenda Hasty, Fayetteville, Russell and Pam Hasty, Tennessee, and Bradley and Aleyn Hasty, Senoia; six grandchildren; and a sister, Valmon Henson, Canton. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.

Two children received the Sacrament of Holy Baptism recently at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Sharpsburg. On Jan. 10, the first Sunday after the Epiphany, also known at “The Baptism of Our Lord,” Lila Grace McGee (left photo), daughter of Seth and Joy Barnes McGee of Peachtree City, received Holy Baptism. LLM certification

Several men and women received training leading toward certification as Licensed Liturgical Ministers (LLM) in the Mid-South Diocese of the Charismatic Episcopal Church. Those who complete the process are licensed by the diocese to serve the chalice at services of Holy Communion and are authorized to take Holy Communion to the sick and shut-in of their parish. The classes were held at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Sharpsburg and were taught by Father Dan Hale, Canon Liturgist for the Mid-South Diocese, assisted by Deacon James Gardner. Read More»

Cap and trade bill derided as tax increase

Cutting carbon dioxide would add costs to electric bill, other products

A bill in Congress touted as a way to improve the environment by reducing carbon dioxide emissions will hit Georgia folks in their wallets, according to Michael Whiteside, the former CEO of Fayette-Coweta Electric Membership Corporation.

In a meeting about the “cap and trade” bill in Peachtree City Wednesday, Whiteside said Georgia residents could see their electric bills rise by $25 a month initially and then by an additional $30 a month if the current legislation is approved. Read More»

NCTC announces auditions for “Death of a Salesman,” Feb. 1 and 2

The American classic, ”Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller, is the story of a man in search of the American Dream.

Auditions for the drama will be held on Feb. 1 and 2 at Newnan Community Theatre Company in downtown Newnan. There are roles for eight men, ages 20s to 60s, and five women, ages 20s to 60s. Auditions will begin at 7 p.m. Actors may attend either evening to try out for a role. Those trying out for a role will be asked to do a cold reading from the script. The Newnan Community Theatre Company kicks off the 2010 season tonight with their production of “What The Butler Saw.” Written by Joe Orton, this over-the-top British comedy sets the farcical tone early, when Dr Prentice (played by Trey Stephens) tries to seduce his newest employee, Geraldine (played by Jennifer Sovik). Sharpsburg church approved for recreation complex

There was no discussion needed last week at the meeting of the Coweta County Commission as board members unanimously approved a conditional use permit and buffer variance for Crossroads Baptist Church to construct a 14-acre recreation complex off Marion Beavers Road. Read More»

Dec. unemployment in Coweta at 10.8 percent

New figures released Thursday by the Georgia Dept. of Labor (DOL) show Coweta County’s unemployment rate up more than a percentage point in the past month. November’s 9.7 percent unemployment rate rose significantly to a rate of 10.8 percent in December.

The new December rate of 10.8 percent represents 6,337 people unemployment in a workforce of 58,741. Read More»

Jessie M. Cook Newnan, died Jan. 16, 2010. He was born Jan. 20, 1928 in Coweta County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Earlie Zachary Cook, four brothers, four sisters, and one child. No services are planned.. Survivors include 10 children; two sisters; two brothers-in-law; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Roscoe Jenkins Funeral Home, Newnan, was in charge.

Rufus Pritchett Cheaves

Rufus Pritchett Cheaves, Newnan, died Jan. 18, 2010. He was born Oct. 27, 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Bertha Moore Cheaves, and all his siblings.
