Angela Northrop will lead senior youth studies at CTK

A special study for senior high youth has begun at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Sharpsburg.

The 6-8 week study will occur during the time of the sermon and will be held in the parish life center.

The high school students will be asked to leave the sanctuary for the study and return in time to receive Holy Communion.

Leading the study will be Angela Northrop.

In 2000 Northrop began working with high school youth at First Presbyterian Church in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was a member of the same youth program while she was in high school herself. Read More»

Caputo chosen as children’s director at CTK

Mrs. Lois Caputo has been named as the new children’s ministries director for the Cathedral of Christ the King, Sharpsburg. The new director will have responsibility for the current children’s church program, for Vacation Bible Schools, and for a future planned children’s Sunday school program and an expanded children’s church ministry. She will also be responsible for teacher recruitment and oversight and for the development and implementation of a solid curriculum for the children’s programs. Read More»

Lee Middle School receives national ‘Lighthouse school’ honor

Austin Conley, 86, of Sharpsburg

Austin Conley, 86, of Sharpsburg, passed away on January 9, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Myrtle Conley. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Conley of Fayetteville and several cousins.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville. Rev. Dennis Watson and Rev. Ken Helms officiated. The burial followed at Holly Hill Cemetery in Fairburn, Ga. The family received friends on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 from 4 - 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Read More»

More retail coming to Fischer Crossings just west of PTC

Residents of Coweta and Fayette counties frequenting the Sam’s Club and NCG Cinemas at Fischer Crossings or have occasion to travel along the area of Ga. highways 34 and 54 in east Coweta might expect to see the beginning a few changes to the commercial landscape in the coming months.

Gregory Terrell Dixon, age 35 of Sharpsburg

Mr. Gregory Terrell Dixon, age 35 of Sharpsburg, passed away on Nov. 27, 2011. He was born in Dublin, Ga. on Jan. 20, 1976. He was a carpenter by trade and a member of 3rd Wheel Band. He loved his family and friends, music and soccer.

He was predeceasd by his mother, Mary Brogdon Black. Surviving are his father, Larry Dixon; brothers, Mike Dixon (Danielle), Robbie Dixon (Kim), Patrick McKenzie, Torey Grandt, Kenneth Marchman, Jeff Smith; grandmother, Gladys Brogdon; stepfather, Grady Black; nieces and nephews. Read More»

History students in Northgate High School teacher Jim Rew’s class decided to translate their history lessons into action by serving local children. That call to service led them to helping clean up a special needs ball field in Peachtree City.

While teaching his students about 9/11 during the 10-year anniversary of the event, Rew used his lessons as a “teachable moment” to analyze his student’s responses to the attacks on the United States. Read More»

4 local women plan to climb Africa’s Kilimanjaro ‘for freedom’

These Fayette County women will be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in January to raise funds and bring awareness to the reality of the countless women and children living as slaves around the world. There are an infinite number of ways to take action against injustice. But for four Fayette County women that action means participating in the Freedom Climb where dozens of women from the U.S. and beyond will climb Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise funds and awareness about the reality of slavery in the 21st century.
