'Art of Green' set for next Saturday in downtown Senoia

The town of Senoia will celebrate "Art of Green" on Saturday, April 28 with a sidewalk art show. The fourth annual "Art of Green" is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Committee of the Senoia Downtown Development Authority. The event is located on Main Street in downtown Senoia and will be held from 10 a.m to 5 p.m., rain or shine. The show features artwork made with recycled and natural materials; items locally grown and produced. Community prepares for Easter, Passover this week

The south side religious community —  both Christians and Jews —  are gearing up for a busy week since Holy Week and Easter as well as the beginning of the Jewish celebration of Passover occur in the same week. Christians’ Holy Week continues Wednesday through Sunday, culminating in Easter Sunday, April 8, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Jewish Passover begins on Saturday, April 7, and continues through April 13.

Christian Holy Week ends the 40-day season of Lent which began on Ash Wednesday in February.

Control barriers to be added for Senoia parades

The Senoia City Council voted April 2 to institute a measure designed to provide additional safety for the large crowds that regularly attend venues such as the parades on Memorial Day and at Christmas. The council approved the expenditure of up to $8,000 to purchase crowd control barriers that will line the parade route on Main Street.

City Administrator Richard Ferry in recommending the purchase of the barriers commented that the number of people attending the parades continues to increase while some of the floats are getting larger. Read More»

Senoia accepts bid on cemetery project

There are only 10 lots left at the Senoia Cemetery. A move by the Senoia City Council at the April 2 meeting is expected to lead to a lower contract price to accommodate the cemetery’s expansion that would provide more than 1,000 additional grave sites.

The council agreed to accept the $84,857 low bid by Catos Contracting with the understanding that City Administrator Richard Ferry would work with the company to look at various value engineering aspects of the project that could lead to a re-negotiated cost. Read More»

Senoia approves summer meal program

The non-profit Backpack Buddies organization founded two years ago by the Vineyard Community Church in Senoia received approval last week from the Senoia City Council to use the Freeman Sasser building at Seavy Street Park for a new initiative, “Summer F.U.N. Senoia lets non-profits serve alcohol six times a year

The Senoia City Council at the March 19 meeting heard the second reading and approved a measure designed to help non-profit civic organizations trying to add to their fundraising coffers. The unanimous vote gives the non-profits up to six times each year to serve alcoholic beverages.

Prior to the amendment the city’s Alcoholic Beverage Ordinance stipulated that non-profits could sell alcohol at events two times per year. The ordinance change raised that number to six times per year. The ordinance change came after a previous request from local non-profits. Read More»

Senoia Library nears opening

The building is virtually complete and now it’s time for the landscaping. The Senoia City Council on March 19 approved a change request for the new Senoia Library that includes the installation of a number of oak trees that will surround the building that overlooks Marimac Lake. Easily mistaken for a lakeside home, the library could open by mid-May.

The change order from Headley Construction totaled $7,345 and included items such as the purchase of nine Pin oak trees at $600 each. In total, there will be 46 trees on the library grounds. Read More»
