Historic Palmetto train depot opens

The transformation of the 1914 train depot in downtown Palmetto is complete. The celebration and ribbon cutting marking the completion of the restoration was held Oct. 20. It took a while but the effort was worth the wait. What began with a resolution by the Palmetto City Council in 2005 came to fruition Oct. 20 with the grand opening of the historic train depot in downtown Palmetto. None hurt as train collides with semi in Palmetto

This is what was left of an 18-wheeler after it was struck Aug. 21 by a train at Vine Street and U.S. Highway 29 in Palmetto after the tractor-trailer got hung up on the tracks at the railroad crossing. A Louisville man and his passenger were uninjured Aug. 21 in an accident along U.S. Highway 29 in Palmetto when the tractor-trailer he was driving became hung up on the railroad tracks at the Vine Street crossing and was subsequently hit by an oncoming train. Read More»

3 charged after toddler ingests cocaine

A Palmetto woman, her boyfriend and her daughter have been charged in a July 21 incident where the woman’s 13-month grandson ingested an unknown quantity of crack cocaine at her home.

Palmetto Police Sgt. Lee Gragg earlier in the week said 34 year-old Ebony Daniel, the child’s grandmother, and her 22 year-old boyfriend Charlie Martin, both of Palmetto, turned themselves in Tuesday on charges of cocaine possession, first degree cruelty to children and reckless conduct. Mr. Everett Griffith, Jr. of Palmetto passed away May 14, 2012.
He is survived by his sons, Bryan Griffith of Sharpsburg; Brandon Griffith of Newnan; mother, Marlene Pollard Mobley of Palmetto; sister, Cindy Lawrence, Fayetteville; niece, Kelly Lawrence; and nephew, Alex Lawrence.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Parrott Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Watson officiating. Interment at Holly Hill Memorial Park.

Palmetto gets railroad underpass improvements

It was a while coming but in the end the project to refurbish the aging CSX Railroad underpasses in Palmetto was worth it. The work has been completed and the new look at the CSX Railroad underpasses in Palmetto provides a positive change to the visual landscape in the areas along U.S. Highway 29 in downtown Palmetto. Residency issues surface for Palmetto councilman

Questions have arisen about Palmetto City Councilman Leon Sumlin’s place of residence in the city and whether he currently resides in Palmetto. Another question involves the homestead exemption filed with Fulton County on a home where he might not live. The questions surfaced last week as Sumlin is running for re-election in November. Sumlin responded to the allegations, indicating that his primary residence is in Palmetto and that he will pay the penalties related to any inaccuracy found to exist with homestead exemption filing. Senoia, Palmetto to see contested races

Qualifying is over and up next for voters in Senoia and Palmetto is choosing who will represent them for the next four years. Voters in Senoia’s contested races will decide on two City Council seats while those in Palmetto will decide on candidates for mayor and two council seats. The qualifying period resulted in no contested races in Sharpsburg.

Palmetto Youth League celebrates holidays

These are just a few of the kids participating in the Palmetto Youth League’s first Holiday Celebration held the weekend before Christmas. A mountain of gifts were presented, along with Zumba dances with Amy Jaynes, caroling with Karletta Knox and plenty of refreshments.

The youth league will also sponsor Teen Night Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. Under the direction of Tara Miller, Teen Night is a new mentoring program emphasizing leadership and other teen guidance initiatives. Read More»
