Youth recreation set to begin in Palmetto

Youth recreation in Palmetto has been a long-discussed need. But now, the non-profit Palmetto Youth League (PYL) is set to begin operations May 1 and will kick things off Apr. 17.

“A great effort has been undertaken to fulfill a need in the community,” said Mayor John Miller. “That need is now being addressed by a partnership with a non-profit that can supply recreational programming.”

PYL Director Bernard Knox said the organization is expecting to provide an array of both indoor and outdoor recreation activities for the city’s young people. Read More»

Motorcyle benefit raised money for injured officer

Members of the Blaze-N-Blood Riders and the Blue Knights sponsored a motorcycle benefit fundraiser March 27 for Palmetto Police Sgt. Lee Gragg who was severely injured in the line of duty last year. Michael David McGuffey, Palmetto, died Feb. 12, 2010. He was a 2009 graduate of Arlington Christian School and was employed at Publix in Tyrone. Arson confirmed in two-home Palmetto fire

A Jan. 18 fire involving two homes on Carlton Pointe Drive in Palmetto is under investigation after it was determined that the blaze was intentionally set. Both homes were unoccupied at the time.

Palmetto Fire Chief Henry Argo said the fire call came in at 4:50 p.m., with the first units responding four minutes later. Firefighters arriving at the scene found the homes at 667 and 669 Carlton Pointe Drive on fire.

Argo re-designated at Fire Chief Officer

Palmetto Fire Chief Henry Argo began his efforts as fire chief in Palmetto in early 2007 after 30 years of experience. This week it was announced by Mayor John Miller that Argo has been re-designated as Chief Fire Officer by the international Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC). Argo is one of only 663 designated chief fire officers worldwide. Read More»
