‘Local-only’ farmers market expands in PTC, Newnan locations

A new type of farmers market opened last year in east Coweta County. This year, Our Community Farmers Market has expanded to locations in Peachtree City and Newnan.

Newnan High in top U.S. rankings

Newnan High School has received a silver medal national ranking in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 Best High Schools report, placing the school in the top 8 percent of the nation’s public, charter and magnet schools.

The magazine rated 21,035 high schools from across the nation. As a result of that ranking Newnan High placed at 1,680 nationally, in the top 8 percent of high schools in the nation. Newnan High also ranked 34th in the state of Georgia, putting the school in the top 8 percent of all Georgia high schools, including public, charter and magnet schools. Read More»

Tipster receives $5K after arsonist convicted

Sometimes it does pay to keep a watchful eye out for crime. An anonymous tipster will be receiving a pay day for providing information that led to the arrest and conviction of a Newnan man on charges of serial arson.

The anonymous tipster will receive $5,000 for providing the information that lead to the recent conviction of Willie Claude Mack, according to Newnan Public Information Officer Gina Snider. Mack was convicted on four counts of intentionally setting four fires on southeast side of downtown Newnan, Snider said. Read More»

Mary Don Erskine, 73, of Newnan

Mary Don Erskine, 73, passed away March 24, 2013 in Newnan, Ga.

She was born August 5, 1939 to Orval and Addie Mae Neal. She was a flight attendant for 42 years.

She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Michel and husband Wayne of Newnan, Ga.; grandchildren Zachary Frasier of Newnan, Ga. and Heather Narron and husband Chris of Senoia, Ga.; sister Carolyn Porter of San Diego, Calif.; brother Ron Neal, of Phoenix, Ariz.; ex-husband Jack Erskine of Locust Grove, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews across the country. Step back into history in Newnan for Civil War encampment today

There will be a lot of interactive history on display today (Saturday) as the historic train depot on East Broad Street in Newnan becomes the site of a Civil War encampment. Later in the day the Wadsworth Auditorium will feature a lecture on aspects of the life of Abraham Lincoln.

The Civil War encampment will begin at 10 a.m. and run through 4 p.m. at the old train depot located at 60 East Broad Street. Living historians will portray Confederate and federal soldiers and civilians. Those attending are invited to participate in 1860s crafts and learn about the year 1863. Read More»
